Santorum's Big Decision

Santorum's Big Decision

John Ellis: "There comes a point in a presidential campaign -- and in the lore, it's always 3 a.m. when this happens -- where the candidate finds himself staring at the ceiling, contemplating financial ruin. Rick Santorum has arrived at his 3 a.m. moment and now must decide what to do next."

"He isn't going to win the 2012 GOP presidential nomination. That required a knockout blow last week, which he failed to deliver in Michigan, or this week, which he failed to deliver in Ohio. It doesn't matter how agonizingly close he came in both states. He didn't get it done."

Willard's a businessman, so he might want to pick a dozen or so VPs to fill in the blanks with the groups he's not reaching as a candidate. Women, minorities, fundies, etc. Willard can pick as many as he wants.

4. Maybe Huckabee? He'd do the same thing with a lot less baggage.

Then again, he'd probably want a woman to try and cover for that whole war-on-women thing the GOP's been doing. Nothing like a token to get a box checked off, right? But probably not Sarah Palin, she's radioactive.

8. I think he already has to promise it to Ron Paul.

Or Rand Paul, maybe. The moRons have been doing an excellent job of stacking the delegate deck, and if Ron Paul breaks off as an independent, it's over for the GOP in the general.

The primaries thus far have proven to me that an independent Ron Paul would strip a guaranteed ten percent from the Republican nominee. That's enough to lose pretty much every tossup state in the general.

The only real wiggle room I see for the Romney folks is to offer the running mate slot to Rand Paul. That should put enough pressure on Ron to pull out and stay out, lest he spike his son's run, and may placate Paul's fifth column in Tampa.

I'm not saying that's what the Romney people are going to do. Because it's the smart play, and Republicans don't do smart very well.

Romney will go the anti-Palin route.

He will hit it down the middle of the fairway, pick someone who is palatable to the religious right/business, but not a big personality.

the easier it will be for President Obama to get reelected. Even if Romney picks someone like Paul, who despite being crazy, would humiliate Blockhead Biden in the VP debates (seriously, Joe must have seriously done a good deed to have been handed Palin in the debates). Obama would trample him.

The only thing that might convince him would be losing to Gingrich in both AL and MS next week.
