David Frum endorsement: Vote for Romney or GOP will destroy America

"The congressional Republicans have shown themselves a destructive and irrational force in American politics. But we won't reform the congressional GOP by re-electing President Obama. If anything, an Obama re-election will not only aggravate the extremism of the congressional GOP, but also empower them: an Obama re-election raises the odds in favor of big sixth-year sweep for the congressional GOP — and very possibly a seventh-year impeachment. A Romney election will at least discourage the congressional GOP from deliberately pushing the US into recession in 2013."

Frum is threatening that his party will destroy the country if they don't win? I don't know whether to be impressed with his candor or appalled that he'd willingly belong to that party he describes.

Maybe the Republicans should be listed as a subversive group that is intent on destroying the United States, as their neo-Confederate wing tried to do once already.

We are already hearing almost nothing from the Fox News created "tea party", nothing like in 2010, its days are numbered and a Republican victory would be what might energize that bunch of idiots, thinking this country was on their side.

There are Republicans already showing signs of stepping back from the ledge, the rest might go ahead and jump off when the President is re-elected. A lot of these guys will feel demoralized and understand that the Bush years are OVER and they aren't going to control the majority of this country with threats and hate. Business will still have to do business and another recession won't help them one little bit.

As the political trend in the country, since Reagan, has been rightward, the Democrats have now staked out a big position in the center that includes much of the center right. The health care bill reflects a moderate Republican position. In order to differentiate themselves, the only thing left for the Republicans is the extreme right. Maybe they want that. But look what happened in Indiana. They ousted Lugar for a Teahadist and are now heading for defeat. They're in a real pickle. And without a viable opposition party, the country is as well.

and refuted by Krugman. So, we are supposed just let ourselves be blackmailed into giving them the president they want? Reward them for their horrifyingly unpatriotic behavior of the last 4 years? I don't think so. Give me a break.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/02/opinion/krugman-the-blackmail-caucus.html?ref=opinion&_r=0

During the first two years of Mr. Obama’s presidency, when Democrats controlled both houses of Congress, Republicans offered scorched-earth opposition to anything and everything he proposed. Among other things, they engaged in an unprecedented number of filibusters, turning the Senate — for the first time — into a chamber in which nothing can pass without 60 votes.

And, when Republicans took control of the House, they became even more extreme. The 2011 debt ceiling standoff was a first in American history: An opposition party declared itself willing to undermine the full faith and credit of the U.S. government, with incalculable economic effects, unless it got its way. And the looming fight over the “fiscal cliff” is more of the same. Once again, the G.O.P. is threatening to inflict large damage on the economy unless Mr. Obama gives it something — an extension of tax cuts for the wealthy — that it lacks the votes to pass through normal constitutional processes.

Would a Democratic Senate offer equally extreme opposition to a President Romney? No, it wouldn’t. So, yes, there is a case that “partisan gridlock” would be less damaging if Mr. Romney won.

But are we ready to become a country in which “Nice country you got here. Shame if something were to happen to it” becomes a winning political argument? I hope not. By all means, vote for Mr. Romney if you think he offers the better policies. But arguing for Mr. Romney on the grounds that he could get things done veers dangerously close to accepting protection-racket politics, which have no place in American life.

Better to get that over with now. Electing Romney wouldn't fix that. It would just screw everybody for another 4 years and them we'd face the same dysfunctional GOP, still in a position to wreck our entire economic system.

Of course, the GOP has a problem. Even if they avoid a reckoning and just try to go another few years under status quo, the demographics are moving away from them.

But it is even worse if they confront their divide because they can't get anywhere close to a majority without their unholy alliance of Christian wackos, teabaggers, gun nuts, hedge fund managers, and just plain old stupid people.
