President Obama stands to lose as many as 340,000 votes as a result of Hurricane Sandy

http://firstread.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/11/02/14881936-hurricane-sandy-could-cost-obama-300000-votes?

President Obama stands to lose as many as 340,000 votes as a result of Hurricane Sandy, not enough to affect the outcome in heavily Democratic Northeastern states, but something that could make a difference in the popular vote if the results of Tuesday’s presidential race are as close as polls indicate, a First Read analysis finds.
“Sandy has the potential to reduce Obama's national popular vote share by depressing turnout in highly Democratic areas along the Eastern Seaboard,” Dr. Michael McDonald of George Mason University, who studies turnout, told First Read. “The storm is unlikely to change the Electoral College outcome, as Obama is heavily favored to win the affected states. A turnout drop could be the difference in a close national election, and thus could shape the political discourse over important policy issues in a possible Obama second term.”

For example, assuming 2008 vote totals and a 15 percent reduction in turnout in the coastal counties most affected by Hurricane Sandy in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, Obama would lose a net of 340,000 votes, including 247,000 out of New York, 60,000 from New Jersey, 29,000 from Connecticut, and 3,600 from Rhode Island.
Officially, four times in American history has a candidate become president while losing the popular vote -- John Quincy Adams in 1824, Rutherford B. Hayes in 1876, William Henry Harrison in 1888, and George W. Bush in 2000. (Some political scientists believe it’s actually five, and that John F. Kennedy lost the popular vote in 1960.) Most recently, the country was divided in 2000 when Al Gore won the popular vote by 540,000, but lost the Electoral College narrowly because of 537 votes in Florida.
It would be even more accurate to dive into individual precincts, but here’s a rough a county-by-county breakdown:
New York: GRAND TOTAL: Obama -247,000
New York – Obama -86,000, Romney -14,000, Net: Obama -72,000

So that should negate some of the suppressed blue state turnout.

Yet another reason for me to reach for xanax- GOP twits claiming electorate really doesn't want a second term Obama agenda ... because of smaller Northeast turnout resluting from the storm??!! Pelosi, Reid , Schumer, Dems better kick some serious butt to make it HAPPEN!!!

Obama will win those states regardless. And unless we've dropped the EC, that's all that matters. Let the right complain. Welcome to our 2000.

It should stop old Romney too. However, someone told me that they heard on NPR that they were going to bring the voting TO the people (paper/pencil ballots, etc., don't know) where the damage was hard hit and those who might have a hard time getting out to vote, so........ let's not be too hasty to give in. I'll say one thing about Pres. Obama, he is resourceful, got to give it to him.

"Connecticut Light & Power, the state's largest electric utility, promised Thursday night it will provide power to every polling place in its service area on Tuesday, either by the completion of restoration work or by providing temporary generators.

"It is on our high priority list," said William Quinlan, a CL&P vice president.

United Illuminating expects to have power restored to polling places in its smaller territory, a hard-hit stretch of shoreline from New Haven to Bridgeport, said Tony Marone, a senior vice president.

Marone said 143 of the 192 polling places in UI's 17 cities and towns have power, 25 are without and the status of 24 are being checked.

A major goal of candidates and elections officials is to avoid the confusion of having to relocate polls so late in the campaign season. In Bridgeport, Mayor Bill Finch said he expected power to be restored to the eight or nine polling places now without power."

I know NJ will send some military trucks out to act as polling stations.

NYC will use some generators and may have to switch polling areas.

But the tri-state area will try it's best. If Obama loses the popular vote because of depressed turnout in these 3 states then what is the big deal? Everyone will know it was because of the storm and not because people did not want to vote for Obama.

Well, we could make it up in other states. Many Dems in red states may be motivated to vote because Obama is up.

Sandy may have cost us votes but the country was able to see a leader and what a fake Romney was.

I do want popular vote though to shut up MSM once for all in all respects.
