2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThousands have left California's American Independent Party in the last month
http://www.latimes.com/politics/la-pol-ca-american-independent-voters-registration-20160520-snap-story.htmlUsing voter data from each of California's 58 counties, Mitchell found that 31,772 AIP voters left the party in the two weeks prior to May 1. The first story was published in The Times on April 17
The exodus equates to about 6.7% of the AIP's total registration as of mid-April.
Mitchell, who has led an informal but vocal campaign for several years warning voters to not confuse being "independent" with joining the American Independent Party, said it's unusual to see such a large number of voters revising their official status.
"A voter changing registration is extremely rare," he said. "Seeing this, in a very short period of time, it's a really big and significant number."
Storm's a brewin' No wonder the establishment has been throwing a temper tantrum of late.

(2,353 posts)We will know how many changed in May on June 1st I think. I know there have been some weekends where the call list for California for Sanders was oriented towards AIP registered voters to ensure they really mean to be AIP and not independent.

They probably are voting for Sanders. If they were voting for an establishment Democrat they'd have been registered Democratic Party all along.

(26,060 posts)it was an actual Independent party and not the crazy conservative party it actually is. This was reported on last month:
With nearly half a million registered members, the American Independent Party is bigger than all of California's other minor parties combined. The ultraconservative party's platform opposes abortion rights and same sex marriage, and calls for building a fence along the entire United States border.
Based in the Solano County home of one of its leaders, the AIP bills itself as The Fastest Growing Political Party in California."
But a Times investigation has found that a majority of its members have registered with the party in error. Nearly three in four people did not realize they had joined the party, a survey of registered AIP voters conducted for The Times found.
That mistake could prevent people from casting votes in the June 7 presidential primary, California's most competitive in decades.
Voters from all walks of life were confused by the use of the word independent in the partys name, according to The Times analysis.

No storm a brewing - just people correcting a mistake they made by not paying attention.

(2,353 posts)It remains to be seen how much more of an exodus from AIP has occurred. It bodes very well for Sanders though.
edit: also you lie the story was published today, the data they discuss is a month old correct.

(8,758 posts)Gotta pay attention people! Especially with any registration form. I doubt many of these people intentionally joined AIP.

(45,319 posts)California sees flood of new voters spurred by presidential race
The nations hard-fought presidential primary contests have brought more than 850,000 new voters onto Californias registration rolls, dwarfing numbers seen in 2008 and 2012, according to figures from the states 58 counties.
Along with those new voters, almost 600,000 other Californians have re-registered since Jan. 1, usually because they changed their name, address or party. Those 1.45 million new or updated registrations as of May 1 could grow to 2 million by the registration deadline.
The registration figures are bad news for the states Republicans, who already have seen their numbers falling in California. Nearly half the new voters, 48.5 percent, registered as Democrats, compared with the 16.7 percent who registered as Republicans and the 34.8 percent who either declined to state a party preference or registered with a minor party.

(2,145 posts)Americans for Prosperity? Koch Brothers looking our for their own prosperity. Perhaps we need a Progressive party that plainly says government was established for the general welfare. The General Welfare Party or something like that. Of course, now I'll get an extremist who call me a communist. Actually looking out for the people attracts the red baiters. It never fails. The Real Left or True Progressives: We Believe in Government.
Reagan started this with his "government is the problem" meme. All he wanted to do was reduce his taxes and everybody loves celebrity so they said okay. Now we are third world country at home. Bernie is trying to change that.
Grandmamas, don't let your minority and poor babies grow up to be soldiers for Clinton.
