Actually, he (or, rather, his handlers) found a perfectly-crafted sound bite that hits all the points he could be expected to make. Unemployment up, higher than when Obama took office, economy at virtual standstill. Sure, it had an inevitable "pay no attention to the 171,000 jobs gained behind the curtain" quality, but it will do just fine to convince the low-information voters he so depends on.
