2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumYou want to hear a Clinton supporter admit it? Fine, I'm terrified of Trump
Truly, utterly terrified.
And I don't understand it. I'm amazed that Republicans have coalesced around him after his stunts in the primary.
I'm amazed that his lies, which he tells constantly, that his misogyny and bigotry are resonating with a sizable portion of the population. I'm even more amazed that the media largely gives him a pass on his statements and behavior, mentioning them once or twice as "gaffes", while parsing every statement, every look, every shoulder shrug of both of our candidates.
The demographics, the part of my analysis work that I hang my hat on, are extremely favorable to Clinton or Sanders, but I do get those pangs in my stomach when I see Trump narrowing or reversing the spread in polls...no matter how flawed those polls are.
This isn't a unity call. This isn't me wanting you to tell me that we should all go Sanders. I'm supporting my candidate, because she is my candidate, that is it.
But for any Sanders supporters pulling their hair out believing Clinton supporters are being very blasé about Trump; I want to show you, at least in my case, that is not true. I used to think Trump was a joke. I still do, but the joke ceased being funny a long time ago, and the comedian keeps insisting on telling it over and over.
Trump, and what he represents, scares the hell out of me.

Its routine to re-elect him in Vermont, His lowest election was 56% highest 71+%
He has never had a government or cabinet post, or been in the military.
He was a Mayor 3 times right?
always local stuff.
Wikipedia says In addition to politics he has been a teacher, psych aid, carpenter, film maker and writer, good on him
The POINT of all this is to say he has never faced the GOP machine.
Relentless, constant , negative, insanity.
What you have seen from HRC is like getting hit with a NERF ball.
The dirty stuff coming from the other side led by Nero Trump will be shocking to either candidate.
Actually Im beginning to think HRC may have to pick him up as VP-
he has NOT rejected that idea.

(115,735 posts)could arise from a Trump presidency. I have resigned myself to the probability that Hillary will be the nominee, and that scares me too because she's a weak candidate burdened with decades of baggage and the odor of scandal. Because Trump has an even dodgier past, this will be a dumpster fire of an election season during which the whole process will be debased and degraded beyond anything we've ever experienced. The only way Hillary can win is by showing the voters that he smells even worse than she does (and unfortunately there are a lot of people who like Trump's stench, like dogs who enjoy rolling in shit and dead fish). Ironically, much as I hate it, one thing that might save her is the financial help of some establishment Republicans: The financial markets hate uncertainty, and Trump is a loose cannon while Hillary is an entirely predictable proponent of business as usual.
I don't want Hillary to be our president but we can at least hang on by our fingernails and survive another shitty four years of FBI investigations, Lincoln Bedroom rentals and White House dinners with Lloyd Blankfein. We might not make it through a Trump presidency.
The whole situation sucks balls.

(8,791 posts)But you do realize that Trump's unfavorables are even worse right? Her unfavorables obviously are not the reason she's behind Trump as her unfavorables are LOWER than Trump's.
Her gender is part of the cause of the gender gap with Trump which is the reason she's behind.

(8,791 posts)Why do you think there's this perception that she's corrupt now as opposed to a year ago? Sanders' spin during the campaign is the reason. As his rhetoric has intensified, he's dragged her favorables down.

(8,791 posts)Corrupt corrupt corrupt; the bashing of the party to boot, is why her and Dem unfavorables are going up. And why the primary needs to end. This is killing our chances in November, not just at the top of the ticket but down ballot too.
You all are shooting us (and the country) in the foot.

(58,785 posts)Women's issues are merely a "card" to play or not? The notion that Hillary Clinton's womanhood isn't at the base of the historic hate phenomenon surrounding her and an absolutely huge factor in its development is at best profoundly ignorant.
Name one American politician as widely and deeply hated as her. Ever.
If asked to name even one of their own congressmen, senators, local officials whom they have ever checked for the various issues they so despise her for, none could because they don't.
No one ever checks because hillhate is not about the issues claimed, it's about the phenomenon of one woman having become the target of and nexus for hate arising from the fear and anxiety of hate-full people. A group nastiness centered on her. In another age they'd try to burn her as a witch, instead of hoping for "indictment."
In another situation I'd vote for her to defeat them alone, if I had the luxury. It would be terribly wrong to allow people like that to win. But as it is, we have an really important job to do: Elect our first woman president. In their face.

That has been said many, many times here on DU over the last seven years or so. Evidently I was not the only one to remain a little skeptical.
Of course the media gives Trump a pass, trying to deconstruct Trump's lies will just put their listeners to sleep. Not to mention that the media has been playing the "Shape of the Earth? (35,348 posts)Trump seriously. Just a few days ago people here were celebrating a victory in November. It was a lock Hillary couldn't
lose all these states that were solid blue. I remember them saying all she had to do was carry Ohio, Florida or Pennsylvania
and it was practically impossible for Trump to win. Here I am a high school graduate and a retired steelworker and I have to
say I told you so. I don't think Hillary Clinton will ever be president but I still think she has a better chance than Sanders.
The longer this infighting goes on within the Democratic party the worse our chances get.
bklyncowgirl
(7,960 posts)Hillary was winning. That was clear. Why then the electoral shenanigans? Why the sheer nastiness? Why the clear favoritism shown by the DNC chair. Had Clinton won fair and square it would be much easier to support her.
Yes, Sanders supporters have done some nasty things too--no excuses. Threatening people because they support another candidate is wrong. But if people dislike a sore loser they absolutely loathe a sore winner who doesn't know when to stop piling it on and grinding opponents faces into the dirt.
The Clintonistas seem to believe that they do not need Sanders supporters to beat Trump. That is a mistake in my opinion. I talk to so many people--mostly young people--who despise both Clinton and Trump and who will not vote in the general election.
I don't know how you put the genie back in the bottle but a little graciousness on both sides can't hurt.
