but I read that one because it's the easiest way to get the international picture.

I'm not surprised they endorsed Obama. They're right leaning, not insane.

They often point out that even the far right fringe parties in Europe never question national health insurance and would never endorse the idiotic positions the teaparty takes. That being said, they generally come down on the side of market based economics and being careful that regulations on business do not become too big a burden.

Hence the Obama endorsement.

The magazine usually does a good job representing both sides of issues in an even handed manner. I really don't understand why people consider it so conservative but there is just as many on the far right that considers it as a liberal rag.

Not really. They've endorsed a dem in each of the last 3 elections. They're very socially liberal and the social conservatism of the GOP has turned them away from the party. They're right leaning in supporting conservative parties that don't get involved in social issues, like in Canada or the UK. But in the US context, they're what I'd call center-left and pretty much a lock to endorse a dem for President.

as far back as Wikipedia has the records - 1980: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Economist_editorial_stance#For_United_States_presidential_elections

No endorsement in 1984 or 88; apart from that, they've always endorsed the candidate from the opposite party to the incumbent.

for quality as journals and periodicals go. I think this is a pretty big deal, despite it's less then enthusiastic endorsement.
