2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI think Nevada will mark the end of Bernie Sanders as a potent political force.
Having lost the nomination, already people are wondering what he's thinking as he keeps campaigning futilely against Clinton, apparently oblivious to the fact that there is the specter of Trump hanging over us, and of the importance of making sure Hillary defeats him.
The sexist slurs, death threats, and violence in Nevada have shown the world an ugly side of the Bernie movement, a side that people paying attention on the internet have known about for some time, but hasn't come out in the open this clearly before. Most people supporting Bernie are not the kind of people that issue death threats and call Barbara Boxer a bitch, and will be appalled at this kind of behavior. They won't want to be associated with it, and his support will weaken further.
But what ices it is Bernie's press release about the event, which reads like a parody, totally ignoring the unconscionable behavior of his delegates turned angry mob, and instead repeating his usual talking points before criticizing the Nevada party for not breaking the rules in order to allow supporters of his who weren't registered Democrats to participate. I wonder if Bernie even saw this press release before it went out, it wouldn't surprise me if someone from his campaign gets fired for this soon.
But even if he does fire whoever wrote it, and apologizes and makes a commitment to get his supporters under control, it's gonna be too late. Hillary vs Trump already turned Bernie into a sideshow, but now instead of a fun sideshow, it's a hateful, ugly sideshow.
His hopes of swaying superdelegates to override the Democratic voters are now gone. Superdelegates aren't going to side with an angry mob over the people. And I see his influence as a legislator diminishing too, because his colleagues see what is going on. Too bad, Bernie. Maybe a graceful concession a few weeks ago could have given him a different legacy.

(10,751 posts)...who doesn't know what they are talking about.
Guess what: when people are given the shaft, they tend to react badly. And when corporatists are faced with that anger, their response is to admonish the unruly riff raff. That is what really happened at the Nevada state caucus.
Yes, in the original caucus, Hillary won. Then, when it was time to go to the county caucuses, more Bernie supporters showed up, so at that point Bernie was ahead. That is what is now being referred to as "Bernie's supporters cheating". ????? Really? So once again these people are decrying enthusiasm, and refusing to accept any responsibility for the fact that Hillary's campaign couldn't get her people to the second round of caucuses. Somehow, that just had to be Bernie's fault.
Fast forward to the state caucus. Now the DNC has decided that the first vote is the one that counts. So they change the rules; also, they refused to follow the processes that are laid out for them, so the rule change is not even legitimate. Also the 58 Bernie delegates who were decertified but given no chance to challenge that decision -- in another clear breach of their own rules.
And people wonder why Bernie's supporters became angry. Well, no they don't, really; they think it is amusing to prod people to the breaking point and then scream "SEE THEY'RE ALL VIOLENT MISOGYNISTIC CHAIR-THROWING BERNIEBROS!!!!!". Which is nowhere near the truth.
The DNC could have simply followed their own rules. Yes, maybe Bernie would have come out ahead by a delegate or two, from a small pool of delegates to begin with. As if that would have made any difference in the outcome. And also, maybe those 58 delegates really were properly disqualified and Hillary would have come out ahead anyway -- but we'll never know, because it was done summarily, without any chance for them to rectify it.
And the media has been appalling in their coverage. All about "Bernie supporters become unruly", nothing about "Hillary backers play fast and loose with their own rules so she can come out ahead". IOW, no discussion of the why, and distortion of what happened. Par for the course.

(644 posts)Bernie has a big advantage: he doesn't have to create artificial media events like NV. He just has to keep telling the truth about Hillary (and she thinks it's hell). When a candidate is self-destructing, don't get in the way.
YouDig
(2,280 posts)And Bernie has no advantages left. After failing to calm his supporters down and apologize for Nevada, there's no way his plan of subverting democracy with superdelegates is hopeless.

(11,076 posts)Seriously, if a chair got bumped or even knocked over it is nothing to the true violence that has been happening around the globe, fostered by the remnants of our SOS's actions. Don't talk about violence unless you want to talk about dead and maimed soldier, death of innocents, and the denuding of cities! I suggest you stop using the word VIOLENCE unless you really want to talk about that!
YouDig
(2,280 posts)So now you're trying to go with "well it wasn't really that violent, just a few chairs thrown". Good luck with that. You should email that line to Bernie, see if he uses it.
peace13
(11,076 posts)When you get your next paycheck you can pass your tips on to Clinton. She can enhance the NE video to show all kinds of violence as you say. You get the point. You can't use fake violence more than once and get away with it. Time for a new trick!
YouDig
(2,280 posts)Of course, his supporters resorting to violence is giving her an extra boost, but even before that, he was going nowhere.

(644 posts)Rachael Maddow had to resort to showing wrestling video stock footage of people throwing chairs for her diatribe last night because there was not real video to be had. No real video because the event didn't occur. Sorry.

(2,280 posts)the Bernie people are still going on with their conspiracy theories.
Yes, I'm sure that there are some people there that didn't see any chairs thrown. You see the problem with that argument, right?
davidlynch
(644 posts)But in this case there were dozens of people with cell phones filming. If there was a chair thrown, produce the video evidence, or explain why you cannot. Go here:
https://www.facebook.com/AdryennAshley/videos?fref=photo
Adryenn explains what happened with the chair, but you have to be patient the video is long. Go to about 51:29 and they talk about the chair.
