Burlington Got BERNED

Burlington College announced today that it will close on May 27 after it found itself unable to recover from “the crushing weight of the debt” incurred under Jane O’Meara Sanders, the college’s former president and wife of Bernie Sanders.

At the end of 2010, Ms. Sanders took out $10 million in loans on behalf of Burlington College to purchase a 32-acre swathe of land from the Roman Catholic diocese, which put the land up for sale to help cover the costs of a $17 million sexual-abuse settlement.

Jane Sanders, who led Burlington College from 2004 to 2011, spent millions on a new campus — 33 acres along the bank of Lake Champlain — to attract more students and donations from alumni. It didn’t work: The college failed to recruit enough students or donations to repay its debts and even came close to losing its accreditation.

It’s a formula that has failed colleges and universities across the country.

“The idea is very common: We’re going to create a new campus, that’s going to drive interest and alumni giving will go up,” said Alexander Holt, policy analyst at New America. The problem is that, as small, private colleges compete for prestige and students, they may take on too much debt and wind up worse off, Holt said.

And even if I were to blame her for the whole affair, she still hasn't screwed nearly as many people as Wall Street did.

But I guess people will pretend to be concerned about a small college in Vermont and not tens of millions of Americans.

When applying for a loan.

Sen. Bernie Sanders’ wife made a big-ticket purchase during her tenure as head of a small, private college in Vermont — and, in the end, the institution got burned.

Burlington College, which Jane Sanders ran from 2004 to 2011, will close its doors on May 27 due to financial and accrediting problems, it was announced Monday. The college has about 70 students.

Jane Sanders’ tenure as president of the tiny school in Burlington, Vt., saw it make a bold real estate purchase to replace its cramped quarters: Sanders spearheaded a deal to buy 33 acres along Lake Champlain, in hopes that the scenic property would help the college attract new students and donors. To pay for the prime lakefront land, the college used $10 million in bonds and loans, according to reports by the Burlington Free Press.

Burlington College will close later this month, the school announced Monday, citing the "crushing weight of debt" as the reason.

"This is a great loss to the higher ed community,” President Carol A. Moore said at a news conference on the college campus.

At the news conference, Moore and Dean of Operations and Advancement Coralee Holm said they were "heartbroken" to announce the college's closure. Holm said about 30 faculty and staff, including herself, will lose their jobs. Holm added the state Department of Labor will assist former employees with finding new careers.

The school will cease operations by May 27, Holm said.

Founded in 1972 as an informal gathering of students, Burlington College grew into a small, regionally accredited liberal arts college. But financial strain and academic probation created by an ambitious but ill-fated expansion under then-President Jane Sanders onto a new campus on prime waterfront land led to its demise, officials said.

What were they planning on doing with the land? Was it purchased it from a distressed seller in the hopes of "flipping" it later on for a profit? Was it for expansion?

And ... does any of this help to explain why Bernie and his current wife, Jane, have been less than forthcoming when it comes to disclosing the details of their tax return/s?

It certainly sounds like Burlington College was left holding the bag. That's really going to hurt the community.

my guess is that a miracle will happen right about August and a 'mystery' donor will bail them out as the only reason they may lose accreditation is debt

A group of Catholic parishioners want the U.S. Attorney for Vermont to investigate Jane Sanders, the wife of Bernie Sanders, for alleged bank fraud stemming from a land deal she secured as President of Burlington College.

"It appears that Ms. Sanders misrepresented confirmed donations in order to get that loan," said Brady Toensing, an attorney and Vice Chair of the Vermont Republican Party.

23. So much for the Clinton supporters' self-righteous bleating about focusing on Trump
Tue May 17, 2016, 12:25 AM
May 2016

We have to pivot to the GE, they said. We have to focus on Trump, they said. It's time for party unity, they said.

Meanwhile, at the convention in Nevada, they engage in various sharp-elbows maneuvers that are, at a minimum, questionable. And right here on DU, they display a marked fascination with the internal affairs of a tiny college in northern Vermont. Manifestly, the only reason they care is that, instead of focusing on Trump, they want to smear Bernie Sanders any way they can.

Side note: Yes, I said smear. Jane Sanders isn't running for office. And if you want to talk about candidates' spouses, well, I haven't seen anything suggesting that Jane Sanders lied under oath, i.e., committed perjury.

But the main lesson to be drawn from these multiple threads about Burlington College is that, whatever the Clinton supporters may say, they don't actually believe that it's all over and the Clinton is the inevitable nominee.
