2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumSo who counts the votes in Oregon?
What checks and balance and safeguards do they have in place to make sure an accurate vote count occurs?

(17,223 posts)stop lying. Hillary Clinton DOES NOT HAVE ANYTHING to do with the OR election anymore than Bernie had to do with Vermont.

(110,159 posts)We have NEVER had to deal with some asshole politician accuse other Dems of theft, just because his ass lost.
But, in walks Sanders, that had done nothing but cause chaos in our party, while using the resources of the party, all the while fabricating false accusations of theft, so the rest of us Dems get to hear the whiners yelling about losing ONLY because it is being stolen. Though any suppression has been in the areas where Clinton wins hands down.
We get the suppression is out there. We get that it has taken votes away from Clinton. We too want something done about the RW theft. And here we are not whining every time Clinton has a loss that Sanders stole.

(36,440 posts)I can't address Oregon, but all the tallying is done at the county level in my state. Our county Registrar of Voters, an elected official, oversees the counting.

(10,164 posts)That is to say, by government officials, even for primary election...no party involvement. No ballots are counted in advance...all counting is done on election day. I don't know what oversight exists at those offices.
LoverOfLiberty
(1,438 posts)(Multnoamh) there are party observers and citizens who provide oversight to the ballot counting. The process is pretty transparent.

I wouldn't worry too much about Oregon's election system, but if you are more interested, you can read the elections laws here.

(7 posts)The primary shouldn't be different.
There is a chain of custody from the precincts to the county Elections office to the State Elections Office in Portland, where the ballots are counted. The ballots are usually brought to the main office in police transport with two officers, often a Sheriff and a Deputy. The ballots are boxed and sealed when they come into the Elections office (this happens at the precincts). The boxed ballots are tracked from there for processing. The seals are broken and seen by all in the boards as a hand count is done. That sheet accompanies the ballots to the tabulation area, which is set aside but walled, windowed and observable. After electronic tabulation, the ballots are reboxed, tracked and sent to secure storage. I am not sure how long they store the ballots after the vote.
All stages of the area, while separate are observable and, indeed, there are usually three people or many more attending the movement and handling of the ballots. If you make arrangements in advance, most voters could participate in the count process or be observers. I really wish they would, too -- It gives you a great appreciation for the poll workers. It would decrease the amount of needless speculation that occurs so we could focus on any true election irregularities. They do happen. But the signal-to-noise ratio can be high when folks don't know the process for their specific state and try to make generalities.
I am not saying that a vote here can't be hacked. That said, when I worked it was a very tough election (George W's second campaign) and there were no instances of any unethical behavior on the part of any poll worker or supervisor in this office. I was in a position to watch for that, too. Now, the crew has changed, but if they use the same judgement they did in choosing their election workers as they did then, they are hard-working supporters of little "d" democracy and a credit to our process.

(23,955 posts)overall i'm pretty satisfied with OR voting -- we have more than a week to fill out our optical-scan paper ballots, we can mail them in or drop them off at various public sites, every ballot envelope has to have a signature on it that matches registration to be counted.
last election (2015 municipal bond measures, i think), my wife's signature didn't match what was on her registration (she's got kind of a random sig); we were contacted directly by someone from the SoS office to confirm that the ballot was hers, although it was too late to be counted iirc.
i wouldn't worry overmuch about Oregon's voting integrity; we have excellent turnout (some of the highest nationwide) and our system isn't any less secure than other states'.
