Looks like Florida seniors are the "I got miners".

http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2012/11/closing-the-medicare-gap-could-win-romney-florida.php?ref=fpnewsfeed

In late September, Obama held a 3-point lead over Romney in Florida, according to the PollTracker average. Romney then came back to lead for nearly all of October, although recent polls show the contest tightening again.

Neutralizing the president’s Medicare advantage is a remarkable feat given Romney’s support for Paul Ryan’s unpopular plan to convert the program into a voucher system. According to the Kaiser poll, 61 percent of likely voters oppose Romney-Ryan Medicare reforms, including 72 percent of elderly voters.

“I think it has helped him with older women,” Democratic pollster Celinda Lake told TPM, referring to Romney’s success in closing the Medicare gap.

He did so by emphasizing, on the campaign trail and during the presidential debates, that the proposal does not apply to Americans over the age of 55 and, as GOP strategists point out, hammering Obama for the Affordable Care Act’s $716 billion in Medicare cuts, while eliding the fact that they target providers only — and that Ryan’s budget includes the same cuts.

Yep. I got mine...the h*ll with you.

I don't discount the possibility of a theft anywhere.

But no, there's no way he can win an honest vote.

I am from FL and I can tell you it's pretty backwards. The only nice thing about this state is the sunshine.

But she has told me many times that Obama "cut medicare" and that Romney and Ryan want to save the program. Yeah, by privatizing it. She is an independent that has never once voted for a Dem for President. She is 65. Thankfully, she and my even more conservative father are not on FL but in blue CT. Their votes won't matter here.

damage your relationship? I'm just curious.

I've tried to explain things to my sister, but she voted for GWB because, as she actually wasn't embarrassed to admit, "I like his mother."

Also, her ex-husband, who screwed her over mightily in the divorce because his brothers are lawyers and so he has access to representation that she can't afford, is a Dem. I tried to tell her that he is more like the typical Republican with whom she identifies, but she can't see it. She's not stupid, either. She has always been uncritically impressed by the rich and powerful.

They are diehards. Listen to Rush daily and watch Faux 24/7. I might explain my position on an issue but they believe in the alternative reality that Faux sells them. Believe me, I have spent 20 years trying, since I was 16. But they do accept that my beliefs are different from them. They are very nice, giving people. And their political views often seem out of step with how they are in everyday life. But they loved Reagan. He was their hero and they think it is still 1980.

The one good thing they did for me was get me interested in politics since they discussed it all the time when I was growing up. I think they did not expect I would end up on the other side though!

I tell them

You think if someone is willing to fuck over a person who was promised something, that he'll refrain from coming after you when he has the power to do it? What could you do when he comes after YOUR check, your COLA? Say "WAAAH, you promised?" He'll laugh in your face! Mister "Say Anything" will say ANYTHING to you to get you to vote for him--does it mean he'll keep his word? Fuck no! After all, we KNOW the guy LIES! A vote for Money Boo Boo is a fool's vote!

if your plan is so great for those 55 and younger, why isn't it also good enough for those 56 and older? I mean, he continues to tell seniors, don't worry, don't worry, we're not going to mess with your benefits, this is only for those 55and younger.
Or am I wrong?

That was his bad. No other way to explain it. Many heard the rhetoric but then heard Romney lie about it on stage and didn't hear Obama effectively rebut it.

That's it.

This is one of several reasons that my early vote for Obama was given with some reservations--not that I would ever consider the alternative.

10. Most Florida Seniors...

...are the reason Florida tilts to the right in presidential elections. The enormous retiree population in Florida is largely made up of wealthy folks who could afford to retire to Florida and buy an expensive condo. Unfortunately, these rich retired Republican voters, in addition to the vast rural population which is 100% Republican, the solidly-conservative panhandle from Jacksonville to Pensacola (except for the Tallahassee area), plus the Cuban voters who have voted Republican ever since they suckered JFK to go along with their ill-conceived Bay of Pigs plan, and you've got over 50% of the voters. The heavily-populated liberal areas in South Florida alone are not enough to overcome that coalition.

At the beginning of Oct I was talking with her and I forget why but we drifted into politics, oh wait I remember now. She was complaining about a contractor that stiffed then out of 10k (I mumbled under my breathe that he was probably a repug) and then the basic economy stuff. Of course I say a lot is health care and it is getting better and will as Obama care continue. She looked shocked and said she supports those RR people. I said I know I see all your signs. Then I said you do know they will end Obama care and along with it medicare. She was like yeah but it doesn't effect me I'm over 55. I politely told her good luck with that but I have a feeling you will be much worse off then I if your dude wins. She went on about I don't know anything and she works for the RR party. I asked worked or volunteer...... I bet volunteer RR are cheep skates and would never pay a campaign peon more then minimum wage and that would be only because they would be forced. She didn't answer.

McCain won it by 8 points in Florida four years ago. It's about winning enough of the margins, I guess.
