Bill Clinton says Mitt Romney qualified to run, defends Bain work
Former President Clinton on Thursday night became the latest surrogate for President Obama to stray from campaign talking points, saying GOP nominee Mitt Romney's business experience "crosses the qualification threshold."
In an interview on the Piers Morgan show on CNN, Clinton said the Obama campaign shouldn't spend its energy criticizing Romney's work at Bain Capital, an argument that has taken center stage in the debate over which candidate can better lead the U.S. economy.
"I don't think we ought to get into the position where we say, 'This is bad work. This is good work,' " Clinton told guest host Harvey Weinstein, a staunch Obama supporter who has helped raise millions of dollars for the president's reelection campaign.
"There's no question that in terms of getting up and going to the office and basically performing the essential functions of the office, a man who has been governor and had a sterling business career crosses the qualification threshold," he said.
Earlier this month, Obamas team launched an aggressive campaign against Romneys tenure as the head of investment firm Bain Capital, which the GOP contender touts as preparing him to manage the nations economy.
In a series of ads, the campaign ripped Romney for shuttering businesses including a steel mill and paper plant, claiming he prioritized maximizing investor profit over protecting jobs, laying off hundreds of people in the process.
Clinton's comments come on the heels of remarks by other Obama surrogates, who have said that the president's team shouldn't focus on Bain. Two weeks ago Newark, N.J., Mayor Cory Booker said the campaign's attacks on Bain were "nauseating." Former Obama auto czar Steve Rattner also recently called the campaign's ads against Bain "unfair." Both Booker and Rattner have since walked back their original statements.

(2,550 posts)And I'd take him over a lot of the Republicans, especially Trump.
He's definitely not in line with my ideals but he most certainly is/was not the worst. He was better than McCain.

(47,803 posts)But the Democratic Establishment types don;t want to be on the side of the majority against people of "accomplishment" like Mittens.
That's what has taken the blood and soul out of the Democratic Party.

(587 posts)He is a great executive and an effective leader. The people who worked with him liked him a lot. I agree with Clinton - you can dislike Romney's policies, but bashing the finance sector is stupid. It provides and important function to our economy.
As for Bill Clinton - it's laughable that people here are painting him as some sort of horrible president. I think a lot of the posters here weren't alive or were too young to be working adults when Clinton was President. If Clinton was a bad president, then we could use a lot more similarly bad presidents. The economy was good. We weren't at war. We weren't in financial dire straights. Things got done. Compromise was used as an effective tool to pick battles and make progress forward. Sure, not everything was perfect, but the average American was a LOT happier, a lot more optimistic about the future and a lot more satisfied with the government than they are today.
I'll say it again... if Bill Clinton was a bad President, then we could use a lot more such bad Presidents.

I don't expect you to see it that way....but many do who have seen or been on the receiving end of the atrocious monopolization of the economy, the shift from productivity widely shared to sleazy deal making that benefits the few at the expense of many....
