2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumFOX really IS a bubble, isn't it?
in 2008, I remember my parents were both absolutely convinced McCain had it in the bag. when everybody else was seeing the writing on the wall, they were still in denial, would never happen, I was so naive, needed to prepare myself, etc. they were too shocked when Obama won to even be upset! they just couldn't believe it...
And now it's happening again. Not just with them, but other topic boards I frequent..political threads, it's like they are living in a different world!
NOTHING penetrates that bubble, does it?! my parents are in for a rude awakening. again. too bad.

(9,774 posts)he now tells me that Benghazzi is the worst scandal ever, worse than watergate! That Obama could have saved the diplomats in Benghazzi but decided to let them die. It really is a bubble. The scary part is that there are so many people in that bubble. It's one of the reasons that this election is even close at all.
BlueStreak
(8,377 posts)There are maybe 2 million people in that bubble. That's way less than 1% of the population.
Fox, per se, is not the problem. the problem is that they have driven all the other networks far to the right because none of them know how to keep an audience, and it is all about business.
In the last day or so, the MSM is starting to acknowledge that it is not a "dead heat" and in fact Romney is facing real uphill odds. We should see a lot more of that by election day. The recent polling (since the last 2 debates) has been very one-sided for Obama in swing states, and that will only get more so once the Sandy attack is factored into the final polling. They all stand to have a lot of egg on their face Wednesday if they keep calling this a dead heat and in fact it turns out not being so close.

(3,248 posts)I've noticed, though, that the posts I occasionally see on Benghazzi on Facebook (always with a complaint about the news media not focusing on the ONLY REAL ISSUE of the election) usually get no response. I think the average person has no idea what BENGHAZZI!!!!! is.

(8,791 posts)and sometimes politics come up. There a mix of liberal, tea party types, moderates, third party types etc
One of the tea party types posted his electoral college prediction today and I was stunned to see this:
How can anyone with any grasp on reality believe this? I almost feel sorry for the guy. Almost.

(8,791 posts)Going on and on about how the polls are skewed, oversampling Democrats and so on. It's scary how out of touch with reality some people are.

(617 posts)When my sister in law posted a similar map:
"Oh man, I needed a laugh. Even if Romney wins, he's not getting: Nevada, New Mexico, Maine, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Iowa. And Ohio is probably locked up for Obama too. Stop watching Fox news and come join the real world.

(3,003 posts)I know that electoral map came from 270towin.com, but how did you attach the image to your post?
woolldog
(8,791 posts)2. Then I right clicked and then saved the image to my computer.
3. Then I went to http://www.postimage.org/
4. I uploaded the image from my computer to postimage.org
5. After upload a "direct link" was generated. I copied that code/link...
6. And then I pasted that link into my message here.
And voila.

(8,791 posts)you can also do what's called "hotlinking"
So you find an image on the web you want to have in your post. You place your cursor over the image. Then right click. Then highlight and click "copy image location". Then go to your post and right click and then paste the link. When you post the image should show up in your post.

(6,342 posts)I just don't have that gut feeling that the enthusiasm on our side is as high as it was in 2008.
In 2008, people I knew were excited to go and vote for Obama. They were amped. Now these same people are like, "I'll vote for him but, meh, im not that into it this year..." kind of attitude.
BlueStreak
(8,377 posts)First off, you just have to win each state by one vote.
But I sense a different kind of enthusiasm this time. In 2008, it was historic -- the very idea of one of the most racist countries in history actually electing a non-white President. That was almost an irrational exuberance.
But this time, it isn't about Obama's race. It is more about his performance, and that is much more of a rational discussion. Many people really appreciate what he has tried to do in a very difficult situation, and what he has actually accomplished. That doesn't lead to the almost out-of-body experience we had in 2008, but it is still enthusiasm. It is a quiet conviction that he has us on the right path and that the Romney path would be wrong for America.
The enthusiasm isn't as raucous, but in some ways it is much deeper this time. I think the MSM has completely misjudged this.

(6,960 posts)... for the most part exists inside the Fox 'News' bubble.
My brother lives there and is absolutely clueless about anything unless it is 'reported' on Fox. Of course, there aren't any liberal newspapers and no liberal/progressive talk radio in the state either.
I've asked him to look at MSNBC just to hear a bit of the other side and you'd have thought I'd asked him to descend into the pits of hell. The social pressure to tow the Tea Party, far right-wing, Republican line is tremendous.
(There are some Democrats in Wyoming -- I was one myself thirty years ago -- but it is a struggle and best to keep ones head down politically, especially if you tend far left.)
He never heard about the Ryan soup kitchen photo op fiasco, for instance. He thinks that most of the entire nation is on the edge of their seats just waiting for more scandalous revelations about Benghazi.
What he and the rest of that state's rabid Obama haters are going to think on November 7 is going to be interesting to observe. I suspect that they will have to believe that the election was stolen somehow, although without ACORN to blame it on this time, who are they going to accuse?

(175 posts)I've only seen 2 Romney yard signs and 1 bumper sticker so far. In contrast, There was a lot of McCain garbage out in 2008. I think a lot of people here lean toward the Tea Party though. Ugh.
Those of us who are anti-Republican have to be very quiet! The friends I have who are conservative seem to be pretty disgusted with the Republican party too. It's been interesting to watch. These people would never vote for Dems but maybe they're heading in the right direction. If there was a more moderate alternative I think many of them would jump on it.

(27,995 posts)There are 3 large Romney/Ryan yard signs in my neighbor. Ugh. I can't wait until next week.

(29,248 posts)and I feel like I'm in a different reality, an alternate universe -- Romney's winning, the MSM is making it look like Obama's winning, if Obama wins it'll be because we're monkeying around with the voting process, Benghazi is a big coverup, and ... there has been NO reporting of Superstorm sandy!
