The Dem primary was open only to Dems and unaffiliated voters, not Republicans.
Trump-supporting independents could have voted for Sanders... but the motive would still be unclear. Would it be, as you suggest, that they wanted to vote for the candidate who would make it easier for Trump to win? Or would it be that they wanted to vote for the candidate they would prefer in the event that Trump lost? Since most polls currently show Trump more likely losing in November, that would argue more for the latter.
(Polls are certainly imperfect, and even more so this far out, but it's still some of the only information at hand for someone trying to guess at that calculation, and could influence their vote.)
BTW, while exit polls show that a large number of Sanders voters yesterday intended to vote for Trump in November, they also showed that even 10% of Clinton voters intended to vote for Trump in November! Also possibly worth noting in this context is that almost no one expects Sanders to be on the ballot in November against Trump, whereas people do expect Clinton to be on the ballot.
