When Hillary Clinton Locks down the Nomination,

I expect a long line of people more than ready to "hold her feet to the fire." I'm not sure I think much of that image, though, if I think about a woman's feet and a fire. It brings to mind some very ugly pictures I've seen, so I hope that is not an expression that is used in relation to Hillary Clinton.

I fear what we're likely to see in imagery as she begins her run for the general election. We have not done very well with women seeking top leadership positions in this country, and I'm afraid any such fire references are likely to burn out of control. It's a serious concern, I think, and a justifiable one.

I suggest that people come up with another metaphor. Truly.

I can make suggestions, though, which is what I'm doing. If you object to suggestions, I don't know what to say to you.

But, I have no power over anyone at all.

a common medieval torture technique. It's an ugly image that I've always disliked seeing, due to its historical roots.

I've always found it offensive when talking about politicians of one's own party, or anyone, really.

Holding people accountable is certainly a valid concept, and is perfectly acceptable and without any references to torture.

I also believe that he didn't intend us to torture him when he said it.

Although he did refer to torturers as "patriots".

I doubt MM has ever had a problem with references to how Clinton held up to her "grilling" in Congress.

This has got to be, without a doubt, one of the stupidest OPs I've ever read on DU.

leveled at Hillary in the coming four years, if she wins, will be labeled "mysoginistic" by someone here, whether it is or not, just like so many criticisms of President Obama have been labeled "racist." Yes, some criticisms, particularly by our right-wing friends, obviously are and have been, but I can imagine that word policing will definitely ramp up here in the coming months.

If by "holding one's feet to the fire" is supposed to reference burning at the stake, there were many males whose feet were held to the fire, as well.

still isn't gender specific, which was my point. To say that we will hold Clinton's, or anyone's, feet to the fire doesn't imply misogyny.

Team Clinton is a sensitive bunch. something tells me they're going to have to retreat to their safe space with their binky once that mean old Mr Trump starts in on her. I said "butt hurt" in a post and got it hidden... I posted AN ACTUAL UNRETOUCHED PHOTO of HRC in an Orange Pantsuit and it was hidden. I've never seen a bigger bunch of babies in my entire life.

They better grow another layer of skin real fast or they won't survive the barrage Trump's billions will unleash on Her Majesty. Bernie has never even tried to lay a glove on her, and they act like he shanked her with a shiv in the prison yard...

once Trump unleashes his BILLIONS in attack ads on HRC. They have cried like babies over every slight - real or imagined - coming from Bernie, and hasn't even tried to take swing at her.

Trump will have no mercy. Clinton may be tough, but Lord knows her supporters are going to flip out once they encounter real negative campaigning.

And yes, HRC supporters.... It is coming...

This phrase - "holding one's feet to the fire" - has been around and used regularly for my entire life. USED REGULARLY. I am 44 years old.

I have heard this saying in a bazillion different contexts, and not once.....NOT ONCE.....have I ever seen or heard anyone even slightly hint or suggest that using the phrase is or could be considered sexist.......UNTIL NOW.

There is not going to be fainting couch big enough for you guys if she actually wins the presidency.
