Dean Barker @deanbarkerHere's how @HillaryClinton, who came very close to winning the nomination, "contested" the 2008 convention. #Unity
watch:
Aug. 2008: Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) suspends the roll call vote at the Democratic National Convention and calls for the nomination of Barack Obama.

As Clinton plans for general election, Sanders is by no means conceding. "The convention will be a contested contest," he says in DC.

(86,005 posts)...it's craven politics as usual.
This 'revolution' of Sanders' is revealing itself to be a self-serving scramble for his personal political gain.

(1,353 posts)Well done HRC. Can only hope Bernie follows suit...would be good for his reputation and for the party...
"Love Train" played at the end!! So good...

(86,005 posts)...too much of his present posturing invites cynicism and animus, when we need unity.
I think the convention leaders and others are going to strongly remind him of that in the coming weeks.

(86,005 posts)...right from the start, it's belied by the fact that Hillary conceded (graciously) a mere FOUR days after the voting stopped.
Moreover, the offer of SoS was made in DECEMBER, and was widely reported to have been rebuffed several times by Mrs. Clinton.

(47,803 posts)And a quid pro quo is to be expected in those situations. It's not out of the ordinary, and not necessarily bad.
But let's not pretend that she decided to gracefully concede with no thought of her own political future ever crossing her mind.

(26,060 posts)and you're accusing both Hillary and Pres Obama with proof I have seen no evidence of. Serve it up.

(47,803 posts)It is business as usual. I am not being legalistic about it, and you shouldn't claim that I am.
In just about every political contest for the presidency some thought and eventual discussion is part of the process of conceding.
leftynyc
(26,060 posts)when you accuse someone of a CRIME and whine when someone asks for evidence of said CRIME. Quid pro Quo is a CRIME. Sorry you have problems with that simple concept.

(37,428 posts)But it is certainly conceivable that a deal could be reached that would obviate the need for a vote.

(86,005 posts)...with no real purpose than some sort of protest vote.
Is that how Sanders wants our party to enter into the contest with the republican rival? For what earthly reason, other than a self-serving show of dissension from the presumptive choice??
Orsino
(37,428 posts)Do we really believe that Hillary Clinton unilaterally disarmed at the 2008 convention?
No, a deal was reached to encourage exactly what we saw. It could happen again--and possibly before the convention--but even if the nomination comes to a vote this year, the Democratic Party is not going to look anywhere near as fractured as the GOP.
We'll be fine.
bigtree
(86,005 posts)...just petty politics to fill in the blanks with the worst of your imagination.
Orsino
(37,428 posts)...and became Secretary of State only because of her previous foreign policy experience?
A deal was reached. It happens a lot, and isn't necessarily toxic. Just politics.
bigtree
(86,005 posts)...you're projecting your own cynicism and apparent bias against Hillary Clinton.
Not much more needs to be said about your view.

(146,325 posts)I don't think Bernie Sanders is expecting any cabinet positions. I don't think he wants any such positions. It's not about whether the next President offers jobs to a primary candidate who did not become the nominee.
I'm sure that Bernie Sanders would agree. His concession and endorsement of nominee Clinton is not dependent on getting some plum job in her administration. He will make both out of his concern for the future, knowing that a Republican administration will work in direct opposition to his goals, while Hillary Clinton will work toward many of them.
Bernie Sanders is an honorable career politician. He will act honorably and in the best interest of the nation. Of that I am 100% certain.

After the election President Obama asked her to become his secretary of state. She said no at first, but he persisted and so she agreed to take the job and serve her country.

(34,183 posts)I know, I can't prove it, but that would be consistent with her complete 180 on Obama.
Certainly, there was her debt problem after her first primary.

And we should demand the DNC gives him a spot, recognition and a role at the convention and the GE going forward.
Bernie says he's in the Dem party now and forever, so lets give him a chair!
