2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumSorry Bros, But Bernie Doesn't Have a Chance in California
http://www.laweekly.com/news/sorry-bros-but-bernie-doesnt-have-a-chance-in-california-6878783Nearly one-fifth of the total delegates needed for the Democratic presidential nomination are up for grabs here. The number of pledged delegates alone for the blue party here is 475.
While late-in-the-game timing has made the Golden State irrelevant in past presidential elections, this June things could be a little more exciting even as Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump take their seats as the self-appointed nominees of the Democratic and Republican parties, respectively.
Support for Sanders among young Californians is devotional. But at this point in the game, he really doesn't have a chance.
Even more so, when money gets tight.

(6,409 posts)He should give up, I guess. Many people in Cali want to vote for him, and he's going to give them the opportunity to do so. The only way to keep progressives interested in our party is to allow progressive candidates to run. In the long run, we will benefit from the Sanders candidacy more than if we had pushed him aside in the early going.

(8,785 posts)Folks are free to spend their time and monies as they wish, many do not agree with you. People in some states, like myself in California, have yet to primary vote and candidates are still active in campaign mode.
Weak sauce is comparing the finances of Sanders with Clinton. The candidates do not live in the same world of relative wealth.
By law, POTUS candidates cannot use campaign money for personal use.
From: http://www.factcheck.org/2008/11/personal-use-of-campaign-money/
Q: Can the presidential candidates keep their campaign money?
A: No. They can donate any contributions they havent spent to charities or political parties, and they can pay leftover campaign bills. The big rule is: no personal use.
As Bob Biersack from the Federal Election Commission points out, most candidates dont have much left over to begin with. Campaigning is expensive, and leftover money gets used for bills and debts first, including expenses incurred while winding down an abandoned campaign or a lost political office.
Candidates do sometimes end up with surplus funds, though, particularly if theyre incumbent members of Congress who decide not to run for another term. State and local governments have their own rules, but those running for federal office including presidential candidates must abide by strict FEC guidelines when it comes to their extra campaign money. They can donate an unlimited amount to a charity or political party. They can also, within limits, make contributions directly to other candidates. A campaign committee can give up to $2,000 per election to each candidate. If the committee is converted into a political action committee, the limit jumps to $5,000 but to be established as a PAC, the committee would have to be in existence for six months, receive contributions from 50 donors, and make contributions to five recipients.
What candidates cant do with leftover money is use it for personal expenses. Retiring federal lawmakers used to be able to pocket extra cash and use it for cars, vacations, clothes, pet grooming, whatever but that changed in 1989 with the passage of the Ethics Reform Act.

(90,346 posts)... and Clinton is ahead of Trump in some polls, 3. Sanders did say "We'll see" when it comes to supporting down ballot dems.
All 3 of those are facts that are not in dispute with people who like reality
PufPuf23
(8,785 posts)Folks have the choice to send campaign money even if Sanders is likely to lose.
In any case a candidate cannot convert campaign funds to personal use legally.
Who said anything about the GE (general election, I didn't).
I never said anything about Sanders and down tickets Democrats.
What is the matter with you?
I don't disagree with any of what you posted 1-3 but you did not address at all what I posted.

(9,841 posts)They quote 538 (of course):
<<According to our latest polls-plus forecast, Hillary Clinton has a 91 percent chance of winning the California primary," the website states.>>
That sounds like long odds, but far from "no chance".
What they try to do is say that Bernie needs to win California by so much that he has no chance of winning the nomination. But the headline says he has no chance of winning California, which is not true, even according to their friends at 538.

(32,342 posts)I've never participated in one before, it was fun. Lots of enthusiasm--I voted for two young men among my male selectees who were very earnest that they wanted to show that not all youth were Bern feelers.
Tons of women, many of color, ran for delegates. I was there to vote for an AFT member who'd asked for CA-14 voters to come out to support her, but I was pleased to be able to have many more great candidates to select also.
The parking lot was jammed and the line was huge. The Bernie election was in SF, so I can't report on it, but I saw lots of enthusiasm at our site.
