Bankruptcy "expert" Ann Romney brushes back Bill Clinton on auto bailout

from the Politico..

Ann Romney defended her husband Friday against Bill Clinton’s accusation that Mitt Romney’s father would be “turning over in his grave” about his son’s opposition to the auto bailouts.

“Mitt’s father would be cheering and would be with Mitt a hundred percent,” Ann Romney said on “Fox & Friends.” “What Mitt suggested was finally what happened, is that they went through a structured bankruptcy. It’s exactly what ended up happening — Mitt just said to do that before they already spent $17 billion.”

-snip-

Ann Romney was responding to Clinton’s remarks at the United Auto Workers National Community Action Program Conference in Washington this week, where the former president charged, “Every time I hear Mr. Romney talking about this [the auto bailouts], I think his daddy must be turning over in his grave.”

==========

Mittens is unable to defend himself on this so he sends his wife to do the dirty work of lying about the bailouts. BTW, virtually everyone with credibility who knows anything about this issue knows a typical managed bankruptcy funded by private money could not have happened. There was no private capital available at that time. GM and Crysler would have liquidated along with many other supporting companies. And Ford would have suffered as well since many of their parts suppliers would have been affected. This is a killer issue for Romney especially in the critical rust-belt states.

that the chimp gave GM and Chrysler enough money to survive until a few months into Obama's term. He intended the auto industry to be Obama's Somalia. (Think back a bit: After Dubya's father got voted out of office, he sent the 10th Mountain Division into Somalia as a housewarming gift to Bill Clinton. In the same way, Dubya propped up the auto industry long enough for it to collapse on Obama. Apparently he didn't count on Obama having the political will to fix the problems they had, most of which had to do with their credit divisions.)

Since he DID extend the automakers' life long enough for a real president to take over, he really can't come in and say "what I did was right, but what Obama did was wrong even though, in effect, we did pretty much the same thing."

This "I was right, Obama was wrong" shit is another place where Romney is shooting himself in the foot with an 8-inch howitzer. Everyone on both sides knows Romney signed a healthcare reform bill that is in many ways very similar to the national healthcare reform bill Obama signed. His running around bitching about Obama's bill is going to hurt him in the long run. He COULD be running on a "third time's the charm" deal--we tried healthcare reform in Massachusetts and healthcare reform on a national scale, and we can study what worked and what didn't to create something really great if you elect me--but no, it's "I'm gonna repeal Obamacare." Which is what you have to say to get accepted by the teabaggers, but I have a feeling that in about nine months "I'm a tea party member" will be a synonym for "please beat me half to death with an iron pipe."

The elder Romney had principles, even if he was a Republican. His son is just a cold, amoral ass who panders to whatever interest group is currently the loudest.
