Related: About this forumSanders: I'll fight to keep Republican out of White House if I'm not nominee
"I think Hillary Clinton and I agree on this, that we will do everything we can to make sure that a Republican does not win the White House, and I will knock my brains out," he told MSNBC's Chris Jansing.
"I will work seven days a week to make sure that that does not happen if I am the nominee and if I am not the nominee. That's what I will do."
During the interview, Sanders said that "of course" his views align much more with Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton than with Republican front-runner Donald Trump.
He said he doesn't think Trump "has any judgment whatsoever."
When asked if he believes Clinton is smart, Sanders responded: "Oh, god yes, she is very smart."
Although the Vermont senator acknowledged that he's the underdog, he said he still has a "narrow path" to victory and will fight "for every vote that we can get to make that victory happen."
During a rally Wednesday, Sanders insisted that he was in the race to win it.
"Let me make it clear so there is no confusion, Sanders said during a rally at Purdue University in Indiana. We are in this campaign to win and become the Democratic nominee.

(23,421 posts)I think it's probably that many individuals voted or will vote for Sanders and don't have 100% agreement with him. I don't know that they would necessarily make the same calculations that he would make regarding the general election.

(42,714 posts)The test of Bernie's leadership will be how his supporters react if he's not the nominee and he urges them to support Clinton. I, for one, am Sanders' supporter (with $$ and my primary vote) who will become a Clinton supporter (with $$ and my vote) if, as appears pretty likely at the moment, she is the nominee.

(1,729 posts)I don't have much of a horse in Bernie's domestic arms race, but I do find it fascinating how many staunch anti-gun folks changed their positions so that everything they believe and do reflects their sainted candidate. Is this a candidacy or a religion? Who can say?

(8,217 posts)That is dependent on each individual voter.
Clinton is not owed those votes. She must campaign for those votes herself. To assume or expect them to go to her is the height of entitlement.
If she does become the nominee, I will vote for her. I just won't be helping in the campaign.
There are other democrats that I'm going to concentrate on.
Forgive me, this was in response to post 2.

(1,729 posts)... is busted. I think Bernie knows as much as any of us with two brain cells to rub together that 90% of the Bernie or Busters are really Green party or other third party voters that were never going to vote Hillary anyway. Why cry over milk you never had in the fridge to begin with? I think that leftmost corners of the Democratic party are going to realize how truly terrible the Republicans running this year are and support Hillary.

Anyone with ANY political analysis can see it.

(1,729 posts)I know quite a few, and they all despise Trump. They don't like Hillary either because they think she's too far left (an interesting irony you get to hear more often when you have friends of many strips) but most will definitely vote for her over Trump.

(2,565 posts)I know you want to tell yourself this to make yourself feel better...
but, come on. Wake up and smell the cat food.
Florida and Ohio (and even Wisconsin) have been set up a GOP win. It would take OVERWHELMING turnout to overcome the voter ID laws and voter suppression the GOP has put in place.
Clinton lacks the depth of support to overcome that.
Trump has a huge advantage, he gets to 6 months to re-invent himself and an October surprise when Hillary's transcripts are released, just like Romney's 47% comment.
Democratic turnout was already going to be depressed.
Now they have an uninspiring candidate, with mountains of baggage fighting against a multi-billion dollar machine that has spent years waiting for the moment to take her down.
Her actual chance is 0.
nolawarlock
(1,729 posts)basselope
(2,565 posts)The only chance the democrats have left is an indictment against her to drive her out so a candidate with the power to turnout independents shows up.
Clinton, no matter who she picks as her VP, doesn't have the depth to win Florida or Ohio.

I agree that you can't snap your fingers and make everyone who supports your vision vote for the Democratic Nominee -- you are running a campaign, not a cult -- but these type of statements DO help.
Thanks.

(8,311 posts)Vote for Democrats.
Winning elections is important therefore, advocating in favor of Republican nominees or in favor of third-party spoiler candidates that could split the vote and throw an election to our conservative opponents is never permitted on Democratic Underground. But that does not mean that DU members are required to always be completely supportive of Democrats. During the ups-and-downs of politics and policy-making, it is perfectly normal to have mixed feelings about the Democratic officials we worked hard to help elect. When we are not in the heat of election season, members are permitted to post strong criticism or disappointment with our Democratic elected officials, or to express ambivalence about voting for them. In Democratic primaries, members may support whomever they choose. But when general election season begins, DU members must support Democratic nominees (EXCEPT in rare cases where a non-Democrat is most likely to defeat the conservative alternative, or where there is no possibility of splitting the liberal vote and inadvertently throwing the election to the conservative alternative). For presidential contests, election season begins when both major-party nominees become clear. For non-presidential contests, election season begins on Labor Day. Everyone here on DU needs to work together to elect more Democrats and fewer Republicans to all levels of American government. If you are bashing, trashing, undermining, or depressing turnout for our candidates during election season, we'll assume you are rooting for the other side.
