2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumBernie needs to suspend his campaign tomorrow!
He ought to take the loss with some graciousness.
You do know that every single other person who loses suspends their campaign and goes to the convention with their delegates intact.
So, there is absolutely no reason for him to continue this silliness.
Get out and suspend Bernie for the good of us all!

(11,605 posts)However, I do feel that at this point, he should refrain from attacking Hillary and return to his positive message. If he does that, I believe having a contested primary in later states will only help the party in November. Unlike some Bernie supporters, I do not believe that he should stay in between the last primary and the convention if he is behind, nor do I think he will do so.

(1,442 posts)there is no nominee yet, she hasn't reached the total needed now has she? neither has trump
If she's that weak of a candidate that she can't suffer the slings and arrows from Trump she's not worthy of earning the nomination and succeeding through the GE
There is EVERY reason for Bernie to continue...

(11,175 posts)If Hillary is absolutely certain to be nominated, and there is no possibility of any other result, then she and her supporters can just ignore Bernie and focus on Trump.
If you're looking only toward the general election, trash the Bernie Sanders Group, trash GD-P, put all the Sanders supporters on Ignore, and start posting anti-Trump stuff or doing whatever else you would do if Bernie DID suspend his campaign tomorrow.

I do think that he needs stop attacking Hillary from this point forward. Now is the time. He should focus on campaigning for his strengths and not against the very likely democratic nominee.

I'm highly unlikely to give Hillary any $$$ in the general. (At one time I said I would, and work for her too. Sorry, voting is all the enthusiasm I have left.)
So my Bernie $$$ are not taking a thing from Hillary. I wouldn't mind spending them in peace. Hectoring is not likely to change any of my opinions or actions, if such is your aim. If your aim is otherwise, well, carry on.

(30,250 posts)Sanders won't be the nominee, but just like Hillary in 2008, he has a right to stay until all votes have been cast. Pushing him out before all states had a chance to vote will only serve to anger his supporters. The same people that we will need in the GE.

(814 posts)Hillary won Maryland but the clear Bernie Democrat won the primary. Tell me how Jamie Raskin WON but Bernie lost. I still find that peculiar.
Lets be clear boston, if Bernie declares it for Hillary I'll just move onto the state races and donate to those who support Bernie's platform. If Hillary gets the nom. and the President she'll be forced to tow the line with Liberal Democrats if I can help it, not Corporatists. Then if Hillary wants to obstruct Liberal policies by vetoing them she can and she'll look like a jerk.
I'm in this for the long haul and will canvass for the Progressive candidates around my area. Heck if I could I would phone bank for Raskin to get people to vote for him in the GE but I'm not a resident of Maryland and I'll do the same for ALL the candidates that echo Bernie's agenda.

I think Hillary Clinton made a fine speech tonight, and I truly hope she steps up to include the Bernie supporters in the Democratic Party. That is for her to do, if she chooses to be a leader. But Bernie has his contribution to make, and it is not over.
There is no reason for him to stop.
And the rest of the Hillary supporters ought to make room for Bernie supporters too. The hubris that you can do this alone or that that is the better way or that you are in some way superior has got to stop. The division is almost 50 - 50, when you tally it all up. Be magnanimous in your victory, if that is what it becomes. Be inclusive. You will be the better for it.

(5,946 posts)they are not getting a coronation. They drove every democrat out of the primary, so the choices are minimal, they had the MSM behind them saying not true things, but what the heck. EXample the washington post ran a headline about Sanders giving him a pinocchio for saying his average donation was 27 dollars when in truth it was more - yes that big lie because it was 27.80. whoooo wow it makes him almost a bigger liar than the no you can't campaign.
I don't vote for another month and I deserve a choice. not one person.
eta and what did Clinton say in 2008 - Obama could get hit by a car.

(146,317 posts)Both candidates' names will be on all of the remaining primary ballots, so everyone will have a chance to vote for the candidate they prefer. The question, really, is about how the two candidates will campaign going forward. There's no need to suspend a campaign.
Bernie Sanders can continue to speak, although he probably won't quite as often. What he will have to say may be quite different though, in the remaining 15 (I think) primaries. He clearly knows now that he will not be the nominee, so perhaps he'll modify his campaign to continue to call for the priorities he has called for all along, but without the animus toward his primary opponent.
If he does that, there's no reason that he should suspend his campaign. He can, instead, wind it down gracefully and still get votes and delegates to the Convention. There, they will have opportunities to voice his priorities, even if they can't elect him as the nominee.
What will Bernie do? Probably the most sensible thing, given the numbers. What will his supporters do? Many will continue to vote for him in their primary elections. Some, of course, will give into anger and recriminations. That will be too bad, but it's their choice. In late July, the convention will adopt a new Democratic platform and nominate Hillary Clinton for President.
That will be just fine. Bernie will endorse her and call on her to adopt as much of his own platform as she can. It's all good, that way.
Still, I think you can expect Bernie to cut back on his travel and campaign appearances. That would only make sense.
