(52,282 posts)don't get me wrong, you've got him pegged and it's a fine analysis, although i think it applies largely for those who are likely to vote for obama anyway.
for the swing voters, it's all about the image they can manufacture and apply to the candidate.
some candidates naturally have an image that works, others can reasonably enough fake it (with a LOT of make-up, in some cases). reagan was a natural; shrub needed a ton of make-up. but shrub was (barely) capable enough -- with help, he could play the part of an ordinary texan. he was able to look ordinary by playing dumb (not a stretch) and generally avoiding playing rich.
to that end, republicans want either a natural like reagan (not many of these come along) or a blank slate who can let them apply the desired image.
rmoney is neither a natural nor a blank slate capable of going with whatever image they manufacture for him. his personality is too established. he can't play humble, he can't play ordinary, he can't get an image going that relates to ordinary swing voters. he became insanely wealthy doing something "elitist". running a pizza empire is a far better image because people can relate to the business, even if they can't relate to being ceo. running a corporate takeover/turnaround/spinoff/restructuring business is not something swing voters can relate to. he had an elite job in an elite and esoteric business.
but worst of all, he can't let it go. he's said it himself, he is who he is.
they're gonna need a LOT of make-up, and this time it isn't gonna fly.
