A snipe is a long billed bird. And a snipe hunt is what you do when hunt them. Someone involved in a snipe hunt is called a sniper.
So landing under sniper fire is not what you think it meant.
So we get "landing under sniper fire" It was just a term for landing after eating fire roasted chicken that was served on Air Force Two.
