Insiders to Bernie: Don’t take the fight to Philly

Some insiders suggested a graceful exit could help Sanders — the independent junior Vermont senator — become a major player in Democratic politics in the years to come.
“The primary is over. There is no path, and there is no math,” added one Florida Democrat. “The sooner he lands the plane, the better chance he has at building a real legacy from this.”
And a number of Democrats sounded a note of exasperation with Sanders’ campaign — and the senator’s supporters.
“If any adults actually supported Bernie, they would tell him to get out next Wednesday morning,” said a New Hampshire Democrat. “But he doesn't have any adult supporters. So he will stay in.”
“He should also do what Hillary did in '08 — support her and convince his followers to do the same,” added a Wisconsin Democrat. “Here in Wisconsin, we have Bernie supporters posting things on Facebook like, ‘I'm not voting for Democratic Senate candidate Russ Feingold because I heard he is supporting Hillary.’ I'm not hearing any of those sentiments from Hillary supporters, and if Bernie gets the nod, I know her people will work for him, no question.”

When I was a kid, my grandparents seemed so old at 70, and my parents, too, seemed elderly as they approached that age, but I feel great. I'm never sick, don't take any medication except Synthroid, walk 15 miles a week, play with the grandkids on the floor when I get the chance. I feel like I'm about 45. Lucky, I guess.

Sanders is at the end of his career. You can't dangle a lucrative healthcare industry lobbying job in front of him and expect to be able to buy him off that way. (Not that I think he is the bribable type anyway.)

They're notoriously vindictive and Bernie has not only challenged her, he's done amazingly well.

The Clintons will ensure he's stripped of seniority and committee positions no matter what happens. What does he have to lose really?

By staying in, he reaches many more millions of people with his message. He's in his mid 70s. I'm sure he's thinking of retaining his integrity, not whether he'll be on the lucrative speaking circuit.

Hillary's losing the votes of Democrats under 40 by huge margins.

What does Sanders care about party seniority for the next 5-8 years compared to the impact his campaign has had on the aspirations of young progressives? People will still be talking about the Sanders campaign 10 years from now. That will be his true legacy.

If you really want Bernie to get out, here are some things you COULD push HRC to do which might lead to something like that happening:

1) Accept Sanders language on a significant number of platform items(there is no need or justification for the usual "I'm the frontrunner-everything has to be exactly MY way" approach on this...in fact, there never has been).

2) Have HRC make it clear that she will honor and encourage continued grassroots activism for social and ECONOMIC change.

3) A promise by HRC to sign anything Bernie and his supporters manage to get through Congress.

Things like that would do a lot more to pave the way to unity rather than simply demanding unconditional surrender. If HRC is the nominee, there is nobody in the fall who is only going to vote for her if she tells the Sanders movement to "pound sand and peddle it walking" as a former, unlamented poster here used to say to all progressives in all discussions). This isn't 1992 and no "Sistah Souljah" moments are going to be needed(not that that was needed then, of course).

It's time for the party to act differently...to make the nomination/unification process different than it has been.

Bernie isn't in it to enhance his standing in the sad excuse for a Party.

He's in it to change the direction and priorities of the country.

And he will never be a sell-out. Sorry, establishment "insiders".
