We’re taking this campaign directly to the people – in town meetings, door to door conversations and on street corners – a true grassroots campaign. This week we were in Philadelphia talking to local leaders about the Berks Family Detention Center, one of the nation’s three family immigrant detention centers.

It is my strong belief that the United States government should not be in the painful and inhumane business of locking up families who have fled unspeakable violence in Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and other countries throughout the world. Instead we should treat these families with the compassion, the dignity and the respect they deserve. It's clear to me it is long overdue time to shut down the Berks County Family Detention Center.
