Bernie Sanders brought his brand of "political revolution" to Baltimore Saturday before an adoring crowd of thousands in the downtown civic center in the run-up to Tuesday's Maryland primary.

The Vermont senator won an enthusiastic response from a diverse crowd for an hourlong jeremiad against the establishment, the status quo and what he called the greed of Wall Street. He faces a showdown with Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination for president Tuesday in several Eastern states besides Maryland.

Sanders sprinkled his speech with frequent references to Baltimore and its problems with poverty at an event that came nearly a year after the rioting following the death of Freddie Gray in police custody.

"How do we have money for tax breaks for billionaires but not money to feed hungry children in Baltimore?" he demanded.

Ahead of the event, Sanders supporters ringed the blocks surrounding the Royal Farms Arena hours before his noon rally. The diverse crowd began forming in the early morning hours despite rain that forced a move to the arena from Druid Hill Park.

Ben Jealous, the former NAACP president who has become one of Sanders' chief surrogates, marveled at the crowd waiting outside.

"It's something to behold -- people coming together across lines of race and class," he said.

Baltimore Co. is, however, overwhelmingly white, as are adjacent Howard, Anne Arundel, Carroll and Harford counties. They make up the Baltimore metropolitan area. Baltimore City is just the downtown area though.

I get the impression that you're from the DC-S. MD area and already knew that though. It really amazed me living there, for an area considered to be racially diverse, how terribly-white both metro DC and metro Baltimore are outside of the downtown city-proper and urban centers. (With the odd exception of Prince George's Co. which is filled with black-majority suburbs.)

No point, really. It's just an oddity of how much one's expectations of "place" don't always correspond to the realities of that place.

The guy 8 rows from the top in section 209 is dressed like a pilgrim, but his belt buckle reads "Dallas Cowboys", totally spoiling the effect.

And the guy two people to the left of Danny Glover's hat is wearing glasses. He doesn't need them.

I couldn't find Waldo anywhere, though. I'll keep looking.
