After 2012, we need to be concentrating on one race in each state.
I have thought this dating back to 2000 and certainly been a strong believer after 2004 but it seems every four years the most important piece of the election isn't necessarily who we are running for President or Congress but who the Secretary of State is in each state.
That ultimately ends up being a deciding piece to this whole thing. The GOP knows this and they always put major money behind their candidates for these positions. They use this position to push voter ID laws into place, decide which voting machines to use (always ones they are politically connected to), decide how many machines will be put in each district (they always allocate less per person in Democratic districts), determine who will be purged from the voter rolls, decide when early voting occurs (for whom and where) and they usually play a role in any sort of redistricting mapping.
There is no bigger role in the election process and no bigger threat to democracy than Republican Secretary of States.
We need to start focusing on these elections. Maybe get the DNC to buy in or hell, maybe we can start our own PAC to help finance these candidates so we can stop these people now.
Notice how Ohio was run in 2004 under Blackwell? That shit didn't happen in 2008 because they had a Democrat as SOS. Now it's a Republican again and we all have seriously legitimate fears that they're going to steal the state.
Let's end these fears and start working towards a Democratic SOS sweep across the nation.
