Mitt's disappointed? The latest GDP numbers prove that the U.S. economy isn't slipping into recession

The economy is still growing
A disappointment for Romney? The latest GDP numbers prove that the U.S. economy isn't slipping into recession
BY ANDREW LEONARD

For an election that was supposed to be a referendum on the economy, it’s kind of amusing how the latest statistics on economic growth fit neatly into the narratives being pushed by both campaigns.

The government’s first estimate of GDP growth for the third quarter of 2012 came in at a rate of 2.0 percent. That’s better than the second quarter’s final number: 1.3 percent. Yay! But it’s not fast enough to significantly bring down unemployment. Boo!

It is, as White House chief economist Alan Krueger asserted, “further evidence that the economy is moving in the right direction.” Yay! No recession, at least not this year. But it is also disappointing, as Mitt Romney was quick to note: ” Slow economic growth means slow job growth.” Boo.

There wasn’t much inside the report that we didn’t already know. Improvement in the housing sector and reasonably robust consumer spending contributed to growth. A sharp decline in business investment — likely attributable to uncertainty about the fiscal cliff — and a downturn in exports (slowdown in China, European recession) detracted from growth.

could one even begin to explain a Romney win?

Economy: sour enough to depress Obama's 2008 numbers maybe but good enough of its raw merits to guarantee him a win. The economy is a brutal factor that seems to make everything else pale, barring war and terror shock.

The opponent is unlikeable and a liar. Where is the momentum?

The opponent is an economy trasher on the record among many other horrible things. He has some black marks with all base groups which is why at this date he is still trying to keep them rather than successfully widening his appeal.

There is no winning meme for the GOP. Plenty of outed lies and attack on the majority of citizens.

All that is left is fraud and an irresistible temptation, even need to keep up the myths for 2016, to do things to erase Obama's certain victory.

All that is left for the GOP is fraud and they use it verbally, unceasingly. So, does one think any system open to attack will be left alone? How much will they dare considering they haven't evoked any legal pushback, any consequences except losing more actual votes?

They can't substantially increase their support outside of the base but they can (or at least trying to) chip away support from President Obama. I doubt that it will be a successful strategy but it's about all they got left at this point.

7. One disturbing trend

is the late introduction of a "secret racist" vote that is being suddenly meme built that could "plausibly" justify a surprising Obama defeat. Very very ugly and very weak, but also chillingly obvious a development. They have nothing left. Remember the "values voters" and secret switchers of 2004? Nothing worked in 2008 though and it is not enough this time either.

Companies that are recovering may be more reluctant to being bought out & chopped up ...

People with jobs and income mean a better job market/rising prevailing wage & benes & companies can't find as many folks desperate enough for a job that they'll take any crappy wage ...

And people still plan to vote for this shyster????????????
