Sununu walks back comments about Powell and race

The Romney surrogate backtracks from his remark that Colin Powell only endorsed Obama because he is black

BY JILLIAN RAYFIELD

John Sununu is walking back his comment that Colin Powell only endorsed Barack Obama because they are both black.

Sununu, the former governor of New Hampshire and current campaign surrogate for Mitt Romney, told CNN’s Piers Morgan last night: ”Frankly, when you take a look at Colin Powell, you have to wonder if that’s an endorsement based on issues, or whether he’s got a slightly different reason for preferring President Obama.”

When pressed, he elaborated: ”Well, I think when you have somebody of your own race that you’re proud of being president of the United States, I applaud Colin for standing with him.”

After the interview, Sununu put out the following statement, via National Review Online:

“Colin Powell is a friend and I respect the endorsement decision he made and I do not doubt that it was based on anything but his support of the president’s policies. Piers Morgan’s question was whether Colin Powell should leave the party, and I don’t think he should.”

Sununu previously described Obama as “lazy and detached” after the first debate, and said at a different point: “I wish this president would learn how to be an American.” He also backtracked on those comments.

You either said it or you didn't, you can't say no, that's not what I said.

These are professional people and they know what they are saying when they put it out there. They know it is inflammatory, they know who they are targeting.

The fact that they get away with this shit is evidence to how poor our media is. They are complaisant in the insult to Americans.

When they see that it wasn't such a good comment, they try to claim it wasn't really what they meant or some other bullshit.

and then ya walk it back to mollify those you pissed off & get the press off your case. "He took it back. End of story." As we say in the Scandinavian-ridden parts of Wisconsin, "Yah, sure."

Reminds of a local story someone told me about KKK march through a Northern NJ town back in the day. Evidently those in town were able to identify participants based on their shoes though. LOL

I agree with y'all - I am tired of this campaign saying what they really mean then trying to "walk it back" the next day. As if trying to put the genie back in the bottle really works.

It's not like it's the first time you (and others in the party) have been blatantly racist.

Why the hell would you WANT to stay with a party like that?!

I do NOT understand minorities and LGBTQ's in the GOP. Why not be independent if you don't agree with Democratic policy views? Why the hell would you want to stay where you aren't wanted?!

And Romney would fire his ass if he didn't at some level agree with Sununu's comments.

Or if he realized he stuck his own foot in his mouth.
Either way, Powell needs better friends.
