2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumEmergency Lawsuit in NY Filed over Massive Voter Suppression
Evidence of a massive voter purge in New York is amassing, reports coming in hour by hour. It involves mostly young voters and is apparently aimed at disenfranchising Sanders voters, and there is a report that over 63,000 Democratic voters in Brooklyn alone have been disenfranchised.
The lawsuit is being brought by Election Justice USA, with the aim of restoring the right to vote of the purged voters.
I hope that the outrage in New York tomorrow is on par with the outrage that this situation warrants, as this issue becomes more evident as the day proceeds. Against all odds, I hope that our national news media takes this very seriously and gives it the attention it deserves. Our democracy is in great trouble. If this is allowed to stand, I see no reason to call our country a democracy anymore.

You think it's not ok for independents to register to vote as Democrats. You think that they should have no say in who becomes our next President or have to wait for the GE and have only two viable choices to vote for, none of which they have any inclination to vote for? You call that democracy?
LuvLoogie
(7,028 posts)according to the state statutes. A closed Democratic primary doesn't mean you can't register as Democrat. It means you can't be registered as a Republican or an Independent and vote in the Democratic primary.
It doesn't ask you to make a conversion of your mind and soul. There are no Political Thought Police.

(62,325 posts)REGISTRATIONS ARE BEING CHANGED. From DEMOCRAT to INDEPENDENT. I hope that was clear enough for you.
The registration date was set for six months ago, no doubt hoping that people wouldn't register that early. Too bad, contrary to what you seem to have dreamed up in your head, we made SURE to get voters registered in time.
Are we clear so far?
NOW those registrations are being CHANGED. Here's some shocking information for you, that is a CRIME as it SHOULD BE in a Democracy.
And if it was happening to ANY candidate's voters every single citizen of this country should CARE ABOUT IT.
YOU seem fixated on something so irrelevant I can't even figure it out.
But if you're going rail about a group of people at least know what you are talking about.
One more time. REGISTERED DEMOCRATS ARE HAVING THEIR REGISTRATIONS CHANGED.
Now this MIGHT also affect some of HILLARY'S supporters.
Maybe you should be less cavalier about this democracy even if only because it might one day affect YOU and YOUR candidate since that seems to be all you are concerned about.
I am concerned about THIS DEMOCRACY and that is why I support the candidate who is also concerned about it.
Unbelievable.

And thankfully literally hundreds of thousands of NYers which will soon be in the millions, actually care about our democracy so this won't be going away until an investigation is conducted to find out how and why so many voters have had their registrations altered and who did it. People need to go to jail over this.

NY has rigged the vote, just as Az did. But we learned from Az. Calls now for a redo in Az, that's what will happen in NY if voters are denied their right to vote.

It shouldn't be rushed to the point that it isn't done well enough; but it also shouldn't be dragged out just to create a Repub advantage.
Although you WOULD THINK that people old enough to vote would know better than to choose as a nominee someone who is under active investigation. It is a tremendous risk the Dem party is taking. Like a game of chicken. But who knows what threats are being applied now.
I hope cooler heads within the party prevail, the closer we get to the convention.

I've voted in NY in every election since 1992. I had changed to independent after 2008, when I stayed dem to vote for Obama in the primary.
I have never ever had a problem.
This fall I switched back to dem planning to vote for Bernie.
Now I've changed my mind and am voting for Hillary.
I knew to change my registration 6 months ago. Like most New Yorkers I am informed and exercise my franchise vigorously.
I don't for a second buy that there were any nefarious voter purges or mass registration changes. I've been a NY voter for over 20 years. I've never ever had a problem.
Time for change
(13,718 posts)thousands or maybe hundreds of thousands of other New Yorkers have been purged?
Maybe you weren't purged because you weren't identified as someone who is likely to vote for Bernie.
Obviously the person or group who is doing this has no intention to purge everyone.

There are not thousands purged or changed. Never happened. No proof. It's bullshit. This is New York. We don't fuck that stuff up.
Paranoia is unbecoming.
What I'm saying is that anyone whose registration is wrong didn't take responsibility for themselves.
Repeat after me: there is no systematic disenfranchisement of anyone in New York State. We have rules you need to follow. That's it.
God damn the paranoid conspiracy theorizing butthurt from the Bernie crew is off the charts. He's gonna lose New York fair and square.

This lawsuit is nothing but an attempted wedge to overturn the actual will of the Democratic party in NY that their primary election be open to Democratic voters only. It's a ploy and it cheapens and is exploiting actual efforts to obtain a fair vote.
No goddamn judge should have the authority to open a primary election that's restricted to just party members. It's a ludicrous remedy and would actually disenfranchise many more Democratic voters in NY voter by diluting their voting strength as a party.
That's what the aim is here. That's what the support for this is all about, as well, not so subtlety among Sanders supporters. They can't win this critical election in NY with just Democratic votes, so they're willing to even let republicans participate, because they know the chicanery that's common in open elections will almost assuredly benefit them.
There's something even more pitiful behind this. There is a rather dense following of Sanders folks in NY who couldn't be bothered to follow the rules and register in time. This broad brush, one-size-fits-all remedy sought in this lawsuit would cover for this ridiculously inept revolution and give those voters an unfair advantage over the people who did bother to follow the rules and register on time.
If open elections or same-day registration is what NY Democrats want, that is something they will pursue, but not in the middle of the election; not on the very day of the NY vote. If people are having issues with their registration, there should be a process in place to address that, but disrupting a well-established and legitimate process of a closed primary isn't a remedy, it's a deliberate disruption which should be rejected out of hand.
Time for change
(13,718 posts)We aren't talking about voters who didn't register on time. We're talking about tens or hundreds of thousands of Democratic voters who were purged. A very disproportionate number of young and recently registered (but before the deadline) voters were purged.
If your candidate lost her chance to win an election because of massive voter purging, do you think that a lawsuit would be an appropriate response?
Or do you not believe that voter purging has actually taken place. With all the reports coming in, including from some NY DU voters, what evidence do you have that this is not actually happening?
bigtree
(86,005 posts)...and I think the court will recognize this as the absurdity that it is.
I seriously don't believe any judge would touch this, but if they did, there's already case law from the SC for them to follow.
