2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWhy I Voted for Hillary Clinton and against Bernie Sanders in My State's Primary (New York)
today, I sent in my ballot for the Democratic Primary in New York state absentee (it was postmarked April 18, hence it will be counted)
(pic deleted of a ballot with Hillary filled in)
Why did I vote this way?
For one, Hillary Clinton has experience from going to elite schools (without legacy) to Arkansas top law firms, to reforming education as First Lady of Arkansas, to being a great First Lady of America, a distinguished Senator who helped NY rebuild from September 11, 2001, to the Sec of State who helped repair America's image in the world following the Bush years. She and Bill are a buy-one-get-one-free, and I liked Bill, and look forward to Hillary. As Senator, Hillary forged friendships across the aisle even tho the GOP desperately tried to ruin Bill's presidency (and they did because he threatened and followed thru on tilting the electoral college map to the Democrats). Whatever the GOP claims, Bill Clinton's 60%+ approval ratings in his second term imply that he united the country in a way Dubya did not, and even Obama has not. Hillary also had high FLOTUS job approvals back then and routinely was the most admired woman in America. Aside from being able to work across the aisle, Hillary knows how and when to pick fights, and has practical and doable good ideas to advance economic, environmental, reproductive rights, and American leadership's progress.
I didn't just vote the way I did today to support Hillary. I also voted to oppose Bernie Sanders. Why? He, like Trump, says things many people want to happen but have no clue how to implement it, and in some cases, would not be able to implement it. Or it would backfire. He is a protectionist, which would be bad for our economy, despite free trade being a popular scapegoat. Worst of all, his view of the world, and our national security, would not be in good hands. I think global warming is a huge problem, but no, its not on par with international terrorism and Iranian nukes. He lied about Israel in Gaza. He supported communists in central America.
I look forward to tomorrow when he loses New York in a landslide. Join me in celebration!

(10,476 posts)I love this. There wasn't even an argument here, a back n forth with lots of fun and nasty words exchanged, which is what usually leads to an ignore. No, just a churlish "I don't like you, nyaa nyaa not listening anymore!" post and you flee.
Pity.

(8,733 posts)A good measure of improving schools is improving graduation rates. HRC was First Lady of Arkansas from 83-92. I would draw your attention to Table 18 in the attached document from the dept of education.
It shows graduation rates and numbers through 1996.
It also show graduation rates fell between 1985 to 1996. All years that would have been impacted by improvements to the state education system....

(10,164 posts)I disagree with the very large majority of it...but that's not the point. You presented (civilly...) your reasons for preferring your candidate. Not nearly enough of that around here... You are one of the few actively-posting Hillary supporters not on my Ignore list. Posts like this, and the person they indicate is behind them, is why.

(28,136 posts)Are you for real?
Here's some facts you overlooked.
Hillary was paid heavily for speeches to the same institutions who crashed the economy with their hedge fund schemes and toxic mortgage-backed securities.
Her son-in-law worked 8 years in the hedge fund industry at Goldman Sachs before starting his own hedge fund group into which the Goldman Sachs CEO is invested.

And her campaign manager John Podesta (Group) handles PR (public relations) for billions of dollars in arms sales to the Saudis from such big players like Lockheed Martin.
You know Saudi Arabia?... the country responsible for 9/11?
Well the John Podesta Group is essentially a go-between that helps Saudi Arabia with their image to further sales growth in weaponry, etc.

Look...the military industrial banking complex is powerful and they want her at the helm.
The .1%'s gravy train must be protected in their view.
Bottom line...The powers that be are much more comfortable with her as President rather than Bernie.
