2016 Postmortem

over and done with. Minnesota went for Bernie in its caucuses. I was the caucus chair for my precinct. The meeting went smoothly, with nobody calling anyone names or taunting anyone on either side. Then, this Saturday, I was a delegate at our DFL Party state senate convention. 8 out of 12 delegates actually showed up from my precinct, which is a pretty good turnout really. We all had a great conversation together before the convention started. Not once did anyone mention Hillary or Bernie. Instead, we talked about the legislation that is going to switch our state from caucuses to primaries for 2020. Everyone though that was a great idea.
The convention had zero to do with the presidential race. It was about our state legislators, all of whom made an appearance and a short speech. Our state's Attorney General was there, as was the Governor's second in command and our congressional representative, Betty McCollum.
Each of them made a brief speech. Not once was either presidential candidate mentioned. Instead, each candidate made a strong pitch for solid GOTV efforts. We have three congressional districts that could be flipped from Republicans to Democrats. That's what fired up the delegates at the convention, not the presidential primary race. We're past that now.
So, tomorrow, NY holds its primaries. Here on DU, we're all talking about that, arguing about it, and trying to predict how it will go. On Wednesday, the results for the only poll that matters will be in the news and we can forget about New York and look forward to the primaries the next week.
What happens will happen. One of our two candidates will end up being the nominee. Both are qualified for the job of President. Both share most of their positions. I'll gladly vote for and support either candidate. No worries.
My primary event is over. I've already moved on to thinking about the general election. We have legislative races to win. At the end of July, I'll know for whom I'll be voting in November to become our President. But I'm already putting yard signs up for our legislative races. I'm not concerned any longer about who the presidential nominee will be. We'll know soon enough. I can't be bothered with duking it out over the presidential nomination.
In the immortal words of David Byrne: "I ain't got time for that now."
