After some will-he-or-won't-he intrigue, Bernie Sanders finally did get his meeting with Pope Francis on Saturday morning in Vatican City. Although the presidential hopeful was seemingly ecstatic about the very brief encounter, the pontiff did his best to play it down, characterizing it as pretty much a quick hello. "When I came down, I greeted them, shook their hands and nothing more, the pope told reporters. This is good manners. It's called good manners and not getting mixed up in politics. If anyone thinks that greeting someone means getting involved in politics, they should see a psychiatrist.
Sanders, on the other hand, said the hallway encounter amounted to an extraordinary moment, adding that he enjoyed the opportunity to chat with him. After their brief encounter, the presidential hopeful was filled with praise for the leader who has done precious little to tackle the rampant child sex abuse perpetrated by members of the institution he heads and has repeatedly talked about the need to treat gays and lesbians like second-class citizens.
"I just conveyed to him my admiration for the extraordinary work he is doing raising some of the most important issues facing our planet and the billions of people on the planet and injecting the need for morality in the global economy," Sanders said. No photographs were taken of the encounter and Sanders declined to say what the pope told him.
The senator from Vermont was at the Vatican days before the crucial New York primary on Tuesday to attend a conference on social, economic, and environmental issues. "The issues that I talked about yesterday at the conference, as you well know, are issues that I have been talking about not just throughout this campaign but throughout my political life," Sanders said in an interview with the Associated Press.

(28,136 posts)You've got Hillary paid heavily for speeches to the same institutions who crashed the economy with their hedge fund schemes and toxic mortgage-backed securities.
Her son-in-law worked 8 years in the hedge fund industry at Goldman Sachs before starting his own hedge fund group into which the Goldman Sachs CEO is invested.
And her campaign manager John Podesta (Group) handles PR (public relations) for billions of dollars in arms sales to the Saudis from such big players like Lockheed Martin.
You know Saudi Arabia?... the country responsible for 9/11?
Well the John Podesta Group is essentially a go-between that helps Saudi Arabia with their image to further sales growth in weaponry, etc.
The military industrial banking complex is powerful and they want her at the helm.
They are more comfortable with her as President rather than Bernie.

And also unlike Bernie she's willing to compromise on abortion:

(3,431 posts)Yes, the Pope cannot change the Vatican's long
held discrimination on several issues.
Yet, he is able and has done so to call the way
we treat the planet and all life in it a "suicide
road", and ask for a humanitarian effort to fight
against greed.
This man is fighting his own Vatican policies, and
yes, is risking his life for that.(But you may not
recall what happens to "revolutionary"Popes).
Thus the fact that Bernie joins him with those two
unbelievably important issues is a crime now?
Where do you stand in regard to those issues?

Love is the only light which can constantly illuminate a world grown dim.
The divorced who have entered a new union should be made to feel part of the Church. They are not excommunicated.
People with disabilities are a gift for the family and an opportunity to grow in love, mutual aid and unity.
No one can be excluded from the mercy of God. The Church is the house where everyone is welcomed and no one is rejected.
I can't find it in myself to judge him more harshly than people I know family, friends, acquaintances, who in my opinion have some extremely backwards views. They also have some good qualities and they aren't trying to hurt people, they might though with their narrow thinking. But, on the other hand they also care about their friends, their family, their acquaintances and they do try to cope with a changing world. No one I know is a raging Foxaholic and the Pope doesn't strike me as that sort of person either.

It's odd to see you snarling at Francis after months and months of extremely active promotion of Francis who was just as opposed to LGBT rights and contraception then as he is today. You aggressively praised and lauded him, promoted him and held him up as an example of excellence.
Pretty hypocritical.

You have been one of the most active Francis boosters on DU. But now.....not. And that really is something you should own and address and discuss with the community here today. You seem to fault Bernie even when he agrees with your established world view and that makes you look as if you are motivated by bias or bigotry and not by policy or principle. It has to be said.
