It really means "well we are behind but we can find a poll or two within the margin of error"

means "even our numbers show that we're losing - indeed, our own numbers show us losing by so much that we can't say that we're tied without stretching credulity, so we'll go with 'essentially' tied, since that's an adequate qualifier to indicate that we're not saying we're tied in actual fact as indicated by even our own internal poll numbers, but rather in a metaphysical and unverifiable sense."

If I was a GOPer and I heard the Romney campaign note an "essential" tie in Ohio with less than two weeks until election day, I'd be crying in bed.

and "essentially" tied could mean down 3-5 points too. Because 3-5 is still in the MOE

Down 10-points = close to the margin of error.
Down 5 points =essentially tied
Tied= a comfortable lead.
Up 5 points= landslide
Up 10 points= mandate.

26. The Media is in the bag for a veryclose race...

It certainly makes sense for the media to keep the campaign newsworthy by focusing on any evidence that things are very close. The problem, in my view, is that the appearance of a close race (a widespread belief that "this could go either way, folks!&quot is a necessary cover for wrong doers, whether it involves some kind voter suppression, actual vote flipping, or anything else (a la 2000). As long as everyone believes the race is thisclose, no one will be surprised to learn that Romney wins. Something has to change. It is clear that nothing is going to happen to change the workings of our very flawed and vulnerable election systems (especially in Ohio). So, what has to change is that media narrative. I just hope that in these last days before the election it becomes clear that a Romney win would indicate something quite unlikely, some so unlikely that even those who might be interested in rigging the election might recognize that they lack the cover to do so. (I sound like a tin hat, I know. But dang this stuff worries me...)
