Bernie Sanders fans in debate audience thought they were at the Jerry Springer show
By Bill Palmer | April 15, 2016
Last night I watched this really bad rerun of the Jerry Springer show, the one where the cranky old guy kept sticking his finger in the face of some woman while calling her a racist, even as he himself insisted that the opinions of black people somehow didnt count. Inexplicably, the loudest voices in the audience seemed to be siding with the guy. The crowd started chanting Jerry! Jerry! to signal their approval. No wait a minute, they were chanting Bernie! Bernie! This wasnt the Springer show. This televised dumpster fire was somehow a Presidential debate.
In an election where we were all beginning to think that only the republicans could embarrass themselves on the national debate stage, last nights contest between Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton was proof that even people with evolved liberal views on the issues can act just as boorishly as those with the boorish conservative views. Sanders wagged his finger at Clinton a total of ninety-six times during a two hour stretch.
Who acts like that? Certainly not a democrat. Maybe thats why Clinton keeps asking if Sanders really is one. For the record, .............................
And then, as if to nullify his own point, Sanders went on to emphatically suggest that all those millions of votes he lost by in southern states dont count. He can thinly veil it in an argument that those are red states all he wants. ..........................
In the final leg of the debate, when it was supposed to be all about stately gestures about bringing America together and Presidential-sounding closing remarks, the fans of Bernie Sanders in the audience instead began chanting Bernie! Bernie! so loudly and inappropriately that the debate might as well have been called off at that point.
And yet CNN did nothing, before or during the debate, to prevent the audience from acting like hooligans who seemed to truly believe they were at a taping of the Jerry Springer show. Perhaps Bernies fans dont take this election any more seriously than they would a tabloid talk show. That might explain why theyre backing a candidate who has offered nothing beyond a few simple catch phrases and a penchant for acting like an jerk toward anyone on the stage who came with better prepared answers. ........................
