2016 Postmortem

Again and again, Clinton attempted to subdue every sharp query that came her way by speaking in praise of the incremental measures she intends to take toward what she has now taken to calling her own bold ideas, such as raising the minimum wage in steps by way of getting to the progressive goal of $15 an hour. She mocked the idea of free college by offering her fathers homely wisdom that one should read the fine print when something is offered for free. But Sanders never let her get away, and neither did the moderators, to their credit. In contrast to previous debates, certainly in recent election cycles, the debate remained firmly grounded in facts rather than distractions, fears, and absurd hypotheticals, which by itself is a notable shift in consciousness.
As the debate wore on, the contradictions in Clintons attempt to square the circle became more and more evident. Sanders had worn her down so greatly, with the gentlemanly demeanor she so clearly despises, that he had to do less and less work to expose her lies. He would simply shake his head, roll his eyes in disbelief, while Clinton seemed to dig ever deeper holes for herself.
In the name of incrementalist competence, she refused to answer whether she would support a tax on Wall Street speculative transactions (a pretty orthodox economic idea that has been around for a long time), couldnt excuse her way out of support for fracking technology all over the world, refused to grant that Israel had used disproportionate response in response to any attacks, and couldnt find a way to escape from her advocacy of escalated military responses in Libya and Syria.

(51,122 posts)But the most telling moment of the night came when CNN's Dana Bash drilled to the heart of Sanders' signature attack against Clinton. "Senator Sanders, you have consistently criticized Secretary Clinton for accepting money from Wall Street," she said. "Can you name one decision that she made as senator that shows that he favored banks because of the money she received?"
Here's the long version of his answer:
Sure. Sure. The obvious decision is when the greed and recklessness and illegal behavior of Wall Street brought this country into the worst economic downturn since the Great Recession the Great Depression of the '30s, when millions of people lost their jobs, and their homes, and their life savings, the obvious response to that is that you've got a bunch of fraudulent operators and that they have got to be broken up.
That was my view way back, and I introduced legislation to do that. Now, Secretary Clinton was busy giving speeches to Goldman Sachs for $225,000 a speech.
So the problem response the proper response in my view is we should break them up. And that's what my legislation does.
Here's the shorter version: No, he cannot name such a decision.

(25 posts)$225,000 across 3 speeches. Why can't we name any decisions? Maybe it's because she refuses to release the transcripts of those speeches. After all, who wouldn't change their mind over $225,000 a speech?
It was pretty glowing about us, one person who watched the event said. Its so far from what she sounds like as a candidate now. It was like a rah-rah speech. She sounded more like a Goldman Sachs managing director.
Hmm.. But she says she was very stern with Goldman that they need to fix things..

(34,661 posts)This Election is ours to lose. And we had better get prepared to back who ever comes out of the Convention as our Standard Barrier. Just look at what is happening around the Nation, there is a major shift in Political preferences and that is Center Left. No matter who succeeds, the message to the voters is going to be,Enough of the Austerity of the GOP,it is time to invest in our people and not in Wall Street.

(34,661 posts)Convention two weeks ago. Did not make the cut for State. My focus is now, regaining our State Legislature after the 2014 debacle of our Party by not getting our people to the Polls. Bernie will shake the hell out of the National Convention via his steady demeanor and HRC could prevail. Been a Democrat for six decades, and when all is said and done, you just do the right thing and that is not staying home on Election Day.
Latest polls give we Dems plus eight or more on the Senate side.
Plus thirteen, and got a hunch that could easily be forty or more, once Gowdy does his Benghazi Stupid.
No matter what,Bernie is not going away any time soon, the Electoral System in the Democratic Party was taken over by the Third Way People to prevent another Walter Mondale Candidate from heading the Party. And that in it's self is changing by the minute, these Super Delegates do not want to be on the wrong side of History.

(3,017 posts)But in addition to leaving out her repeatedly ducking the carbon tax question as mentioned above, she also made a fool of herself trying to avoid giving a direct answer on whether or not she was in favor of raising the cap on income subject to Social Security taxes from the current $118,000 limit. She tried to pretend yes without actually saying yes. Bernie asked her twice "is that a yes?", and she started dancing again...well, that's one of many things we can do, if that's what people decide on then I'll support it. It was triangulating Hillary on full display.
