88. What does the image have to do with the blood libel?
Fri Apr 15, 2016, 12:01 PM
Apr 2016

I'm not defending the image - I couldn't care less about it. But I'm genuinely puzzled by your post. The blood libel is the medieval charge that Jews drink the blood of Christian children. The image here is that of the immaculate heart of Mary with Bernie's face over it. The juxtaposition of Bernie's face there is clearly a joke that Bernie has achieved semi-divine status among some of his followers. You don't have to agree with the joke (and I don't find it particularly amusing myself), but I have a hard time seeing the blood libel or any antisemitism in there. Perhaps anti-Catholicism, but even that seems like a stretch.

Fri Apr 15, 2016, 12:10 PM
Apr 2016

That would be the blood of Christ and that is where blood libel comes in.

I grew up in a Catholic country, this is extremely coded. The only reason why I heard the dog whistle is because I know what I am looking for. As a Jew I also took graduate coursework in antisemitism and it's sordid history, so for me it wasn't hard to decode. It is supposed to be a dog whistle, And most people are not hearing it, so it is fairly effective as such. Oh they innocently claim they are trying to claim that is an image of Sanders as a Saint. that is also coded anti-Semitism. The image though meets community standards. Which makes me wonder.

I will give whoever put it together first props for creativity. This kind of imagery is not common in the US and my good friends at white supremacy inc, have not been this coded for years. Trust me though, people who are anti-Semitic are getting the whistle.

Suffice it to say , it is offensive.

106. A couple of questions:
Fri Apr 15, 2016, 12:40 PM
Apr 2016

Christ is a Jew, is he not?
Do Catholics symbolically drink the blood of Christ at every mass?

One more....can you articulate exactly how that image, tasteless as it is, is "anti-Semitic"?

Nonhlanhla

111. Actually the picture used here is not of Christ
Fri Apr 15, 2016, 02:52 PM
Apr 2016

but of Mary. It's one of the images of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The juxtaposition of using Bernie's face on her picture is one of the reasons why I don't find the image aesthetically pleasing.

But the blood libel has nothing to do with this. And I am very well versed in both Christian theology and the history of anti-semitism. The blood libel is one of the most absurd things medieval Christians believed (and that is saying a lot), and the history of anti-semitism is absolutely terrible, but to find a reference to the blood libel charge in this image seems a bit of a reach to me.

9 delegates for Bernie, 4 for Hillary.

Bernie Sanders on Monday heralded his convincing win over Hillary Clinton in the Democrats Abroad global primary as proof that his “political revolution” was now “resonating all over the world”.

With turnout up 50% from 2008, 34,570 US citizens living in 38 countries voted by internet, mail, fax or in person. Sanders took 69% of the vote to earn nine delegates to the national convention in August; Hillary Clinton took 31% and four.
