(24,411 posts)I hope his participation is a great experience for him and I hope that he is able to contribute and add to the discussion in ways that make a difference.
Who knows what will happen?
Should be interesting!
Very proud of Bernie for being extended this invitation from Mon. Sorondo.

(24,411 posts)I am excited because Bernie was invited to attend this conference. I think it's a cool opportunity for Bernie. He's been championing the issues of income inequality and social justice for years.
We all have jobs, talents and expertise in certain areas (including yourself!). Can you imagine being asked to participate in a conference at the Vatican to impart your wisdom and thoughts on a subject matter that you had been discussing for decades?
It's exciting!
I really can't wait to see what happens.

(28,876 posts)And I think those comments suggest exactly that.
To paraphrase: yes, the Pope approved Sanders's invitation and likes to do unexpected things.

(24,411 posts)Italy is 7 hours ahead of us. I hope Bernie is able to sleep on the plane. Looks roomy enough. He shouldn't have a problem with that.
I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings for Bernie and his supporters!

(68,868 posts)1) delta doesn't have a commercial flight at this time;
2) they're not boarding at a gate.

(28,749 posts)Nothing wrong with him taking a charter IMO.

(7,318 posts)I wonder if this was chartered by the Vatican to transport to the conference all of the American participants and guests.

The fuel efficiency is probably much better than a smaller plane.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,836 posts)Since it's an overwater flight they might have insisted that he take something large-ish and ETOPS-certified (Extended Twin-engine Operations - required of commercial airlines for extended overwater flights). The airplane looks like it could be a 767?
jillan
(39,451 posts)Agschmid
(28,749 posts)Yes 767, or 777.
Doubt they would have chartered an 787, but they do own a few.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,836 posts)Pre-merger Northwest Airlines was supposed to be the US launch customer for them but after the Delta merger they delayed delivery until (last I heard) 2020, when the 787-9 series is available. It's likely a 767, could even be a 757-200 (some of them are ETOPS).
Agschmid
(28,749 posts)Sorry.
I still haven't been on one yet, last time I flew overseas I was on some old beat up A330.

(28,876 posts)Cruel to the people who just want to fly from A to B.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,836 posts)They'd have to screen all the other passengers very, very carefully and it would be a huge inconvenience to the other passengers and the airlines as well as a security issue for the candidate.

And he said the returns would be out tomorrow.
There's plenty of time for them to return to Italy after November. On a nicer jet.

He can get some needed rest and then take on the world at the Vatican.
