2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumso we are seriously going to let this "whore" stuff distract us from issues?
we are in the critical phase of a presidential primary, and we are distracted by a comment someone made who WAS NOT BERNIE and WAS NOT WORKING FOR BERNIE. he called them out because he is uber classy, case closed.
we have a major debate tonight in a critical primary state and people are prattling on about something that is over?
oh wait, major debate, critical primary state, multiple distractions,....never mind, i think i got it.

(13,889 posts)Frankly I'm reminded of those busybodies who ask whether I've been 'saved.' Yes, I care deeply about a lot of the same issues that Sanders fans do. So much so that I studied a lot of economics and law in order to understand them better and be a more effective advocate, as opposed to merely parading my attitude without doing any of the work to understand what factors drive the status quo.

Sure, there are some on each side who actually care about these things but they are also usually not the ones to use the issues to advance an agenda.

TRANSCRIPT:
Dr. Paul Song: Now Secretary Clinton has said that Medicare for all will never happen. [boos] Well, I agree with Secretary Clinton that Medicare for all will never happen if we have a president who never aspires for something greater than the status quo. [cheers] Medicare for all will never happen if we continue to elect corporate Democratic whores [cheers] who are beholden to big pharma and the private insurance industry instead of us.

(13,889 posts)Just because a word admits of more than one definition does not mean that it is commonly understood to encompass those definitions. Ignoring the fact that words like whore and slut are vastly more likely to be applied to women than men is as facile as saying that racism is over because we got a black President or that homophobia is no longer an issue because gay marriage is now legal. I'm pretty sure you don't care for people tossing around the term faggot even though a lot of under-30s use it as a non-specific put-down rather than as a descriptor of someone's sexual orientation.
The word is ancient. It referred to women and was used to insult them for centuries.

(15,805 posts)Sanders already has a problem (perceived or otherwise) regarding women's issues. His male followers have contributed to the negative press, adding to the impression. Your pejorative use of the word "whore" (dismissive quote marks notwithstanding) and the equally contemptuous addition of "stuff" to minimize and diminish women based on nothing more than gender, is under critique. Yes, in 2016 this is still an important issue for women and we should not be distracted from matters of equality when some people still find it a necessary strategy to resort, and even defend, this kind of ugly misogynist and sexist language that maligns all women.
More women vote than men. Good luck with that strategy.

I honestly do not see their point, here - anyone, IMO, who switched from Bernie to Hillary, at this point, doesn't give a flying fuck about issues, which is, again IMO, not a characteristic of a Bernie supporter here at DU.
You know what? Depending on what happens with the nomination, I will be either all in or all out of the GE campaign. Except for some down-ticket stuff, here in Florida, and no need to bother with the prez campaign if I cannot stomach it. Looking forward to that, honestly. Since I have no control over it. There are issues and politicians I will not shill for under any circumstances.

(27,787 posts)The SMART thing for Bernie supports to do is denounce the term, and the guy who said it.
Look around DU. That's not what they are doing. In thread after thread, they are defending the term. Some even think Bernie should use it.
You might want to take your case into the Bernie group. Maybe they'll listen there.
restorefreedom

JoePhilly
(27,787 posts)... both in the abstract, and in its being attached to Hillary.
Bernie supporters appear to not only want to use that term themselves, some of them want Bernie to start using it.
You don't have to check many threads on this topic to notice this simple fact.
Kalidurga
(14,177 posts)I am saying Bernie supporters wouldn't have noticed the use if it wasn't pointed out. And it was pointed out in faux outrage. It's seriously fake when Hillarians support all the things that corporations do via supporting Hillary, that truly fuck the nation. It's not a term I have been using. I will probably repeat it several times now, but I sure wouldn't have without the faux outrage of Hillarians.
When I see some outrage from Hillarians about the horrors of millions of women who are used and abused by corporations for less than a living wage we can then see about me being outraged that some 1%er was called a Democratic Corporate Whore.

(1,884 posts)But you are correct. Absolutely correct. Elections ARE IQ tests. One either sees the actual issues and can think for themselves, or one waits for the talking points to decide on which side of the issue they are supposed to be on.
Bernie is campaigning on the issues. That is why he is in the race in the first place - The issues that are keeping people down. Pay down. Interest rates down. Job prospects down.
Or ignore the issues and use talking points, which makes it easier to control your unthinking followers, even when the next talking point contradicts the last one... Camp Weather Vane is an apt label.
A reasonably high IQ, using logic and critical thinking on the issues requires thinking for oneself. Blindly following someone's talking points short circuits doing that. Talking points are a conservative trait and should not have much following in Liberal or Progressive thinking.
