Making public colleges and universities tuition free is an investment in the future of America

And the U.S. could reap one heck of a return on that investment.

1. Education leads to better jobs which leads to paying more taxes.

2. The economy is hurt because the buying power of college graduates saddled with huge amounts of student debt is severely curtailed.

3. When people forego college because of the cost, all of the great contributions those students could have made are also forgone. We need to develop all the brain power we can if we are going to turn this ship around and save this planet.

4. With the aging population there are many fields for which there will be a worker shortage and it's not like the old days when college was affordable (and a more viable option).

5. Young Americans are the future of this country and helping them to get a good education should be a top priority of our government. We have lost our moral compass when we put the welfare of the 1% ahead of America's youth.

I am so tired of hearing the stupid free stuff meme. The crooks in Washington, their families, and big money backers have fed at the public trough for decades. It is time for this country to invest in the youth of America.

1. Why not fundamentally change High School instead?

We're already funding it.

A large amount (in my opinion) of high school topics are useless for the majority of jobs. I'd rather just revamp High School and make it like a Bachelors degree and allow College to be a real "advanced" learning place.

I wouldn't mind the first 2 years of Community College being publicly funded, but not all.

high school system is really needed. There are a lot of good things that could be done if the focus was on the people instead of the families, friends and big money backers of politicians

In a corrupt system like we have there is SO MUCH that will never get done because all of the focus is on feeding the greed. In addition, I've always found that corruption breeds incompetence (which is why so much is seriously screwed up in the country).

When everyone can get a degree that becomes the floor for hiring like high school is now.

When I started work my job required a bacheler's degree. New hires need a master's and are paid less with less benefits.

If everyone goes to college we have to keep an eye on employers too.

are to focused on the bottom line. Some of the good companies, that really believed in taking care of their employees because their employees were the backbone of the business, were forced into bankruptcy because they could not compete with companies that moved overseas for cheap labor. Those trade agreements were passed with NO concern for what the fallout would be. And it's not like people were not speaking out about what would happen. I truly believe the love of money is the root of all evil. We have brainwashed people into thinking their self-worth is determined by their financial worth. We need a new way of thinking in this country ...

I don't care about other kids who aren't so fortunate. In addition, what about your grandchildren?

And who knows, maybe that student we educate will go on to be a doctor who discovers a life saving procedure that will benefit one of your family members........

Education would be paid for with a SMALL transactional tax on Wall Street. I hardly think that will break the bank.

According to Bernie, all our problems will be solved by putting taxes on Wall Street.
It just doesn't work that way, but it sounds good to those who don't actually think about it. And by the way, I do trade quote frequently every day in the markets. The "small" tax on trades won't come close to providing enough money for such a gargantuan give away. The other reality which seems to escape most BSers is that a vast majority of the voters see thru this scam. Most of us know Bernie hasn't really thought thru any of his proposals. Buy they do sound good in his stump speech.

you won't pay for it. By the way, by your logic, we should get rid of all public schools. I mean that.

6. 6. It would kill off the corrupt "for profit college" industry
Tue Apr 12, 2016, 06:36 PM

Student debt has tripled in the last decade. It is unsustainable. Many students who are leaving college with significant debt are not making incomes that will allow them to repay the debt with a reasonable percentage of their income. And this debt is not dischargable in bankruptcy, people carry it for their entire lives.

For profit colleges have only 13% of students but account for 31% of student debt. They should be blown up along with the for profit prison industry, payday lenders and a few others.

Even if he does it on the backs of poor students who are taking on loans to attend something that is probably one step above Trump University.
