2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI'm married to a woman with blond hair, does that mean I can make 'dumb blond' jokes?
Of course not, it would still be sexist as hell.
Isn't that basically the only argument the Clinton die hards have right now? De Blasio is married to an African American so he 'gets a pass' on making a blatantly racist joke.
Oh yeah, just to take this all the way, my kid has blond hair as well. Guess what, still come off as a sexist assbag if I make anti-woman jokes or 'dumb blond' jokes. My marriage doesn't grant me a right to be a mysoginist any more than De Blasio's grants him immunity from racism.

(89,252 posts)it's just part of the culture and regularly joked about .
being called a dumb is not equal to that. but we do regularly get dumb blonde jokes about fox news hosts.

(14,915 posts)Other white politicians can refer to blacks as 'colored people'? In 2016?

(14,915 posts)Because as far as I know, there is none? Would it help if I was a Clinton?
JI7
(89,252 posts)he was referring to a cultural thing in the community. you know there is a difference between saying "it's a black thing" and "hey black guy"
Joe the Revelator
(14,915 posts)Even if its to other white people (I think that makes it worse), I see no time that would be appropriate.
JI7
(89,252 posts)people as white person also.
de blasio didn't call any black person "colored" .
Joe the Revelator
(14,915 posts)....he wasn't REALLY alluding to 'Colored' people. Got it. Keep up the good work.

(14,915 posts)If PEOPLE as a whole are upset at DU, its because of selective outrage. I would call out ANY white politician who referred to blacks as 'colored'. ANY. POLITICIAN. Also any white non-politician. It is not a term that I think is acceptable at all.

(17,651 posts)Referring to POC as colored takes me waaaah back....colored vs white water fountains, colored only seats at the theater were in the nosebleed section, coloreds sat in the back of the bus.
Yes....the good ole days
Is the context of presidential politics!
You think the context was Hillary just laying back, hanging with her klan?

(14,915 posts)....politician. If Donald Trump participated in a joke like this, would you not be angry? Bernie Sanders? John McCain? George Bush?
Partisan outrage when it comes to stuff like this is the absolute worst.

(8,352 posts)Most of the Clinton supporters in this thread are hypocrites about this. If you tell them that too vehemently you will just get a hide. They would of course be frothing at the mouth if Sanders had done this. We all know it. They know it. But the difference is they really just don't give a shit.

(12,689 posts)It was not a racist joke. People like you have never heard CPT until now and you are already to call the joke racist because of Hillary Clinton. This is a joke that I've used before and I've heard other black people use it. I'd imagine that he got it from his wife, because it's one of the most insular jokes that there is. FYI, I don't think dumb blonde jokes are really gender specific, but whatever you want to believe, that is your view.
The point of the skit is one of the oldest and most common jokes there are; One person says something that might sound inappropriate to another, but the person really means something innocuous. The outrage isn't about the joke, it's about the source. Bernie Sanders and Susan Sarandon could have done the same skit without anyone being outraged. Real talk.

(14,915 posts)??
Seriously, you no absolutely zero about me. Here's a tidbit though, I've been around enough to know that calling a black person 'colored' in any context, as a white person, is not acceptable. Unless of course, my name happens to be Clinton.

(12,689 posts)I'm just taking a wild guess that you and several of your fellow Sanders supporters have not heard a CPT joke before, otherwise the response would have been a whole lot different. It's not offensive in the least bit.

(2,872 posts)because he's black, and I'm half. But the second a white guy uses it, I don't give a fuck if he's been married to a black woman for thirty years with kids and grandkids-- I do not consider it okay for a white dude to use that term. I don't give a fuck who it is, hell, if Bernie did that shit tomorrow, I'd drop my donations to him in a New York minute.

(2,888 posts)doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me. Almost innocuous even if Mr Odom wasn't involved.
Disclaimer: on the one hand, I'm really white, so that could explain my cluelessness. On the other hand, I'm totally pro-Bernie, so I should be foaming at the mouth about Hillary's cluelessness. I'm going with Mr Odom and my gut, which is saying the media needs to fill air time.
