At the final debate in the Indiana Senate race, held Tuesday night, Republican nominee Richard Mourdock explained his opposition to abortion in the cases of rape or incest. In the course of the explanation Mourdock suggested that rape should not be an exception to a ban on abortion, since rape pregnancies are themselves the will of God.
"You know, this is that issue for that every candidates for federal, or even state office, faces. And I, too, certainly stand for life," said Mourdock, after both Democrat Joe Donnelly and Libertarian Andrew Horning had identified as pro-life. "I know there are some who disagree, and I respect their point of view. But I believe that life begins at conception. The only exception I have, to have an abortion, is in that case of the life of the mother."
Mourdock then seemed to choke back tears, and continued: "I've struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is that gift from God. And even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen." (Emphasis added.)

How close is this race?

(4,551 posts)Donnelley and Mourdock have been Tied in the polls for much of the year, but Mourdock has been a bit ahead lately.
But Bill Clinton was in Indiana last week campaigning with Donnelley, so we'll see if the Senate race is still winnable.
Will Mourdock's comments tilt the race to Donnelley now, or is Indiana too conservative for it to make a difference?

(6,129 posts)the favorite. The tea bagger is going down.
His theology is fascinating.
I don't see why he stops there, though. If the rape victim succeeds in getting an abortion, isn't that abortion also the divine will?
Also, since the Bible tells us that "the powers that be are ordained of God", doesn't it follow that anyone who takes down a dictator--for instance, had anyone succeeded in assassinating Hitler--is resisting God's will?
Furthermore, since Saddam Hussein was "ordained of God" wasn't it wrong for Bush senior to suggest that Iraqis revolt, and even for us to overthrow him?
Lastly, isn't the rape victim who has the authority over her body one of the "powers that be" from the perspective of the zygote? Isn't she therefore to be respected in that role, at least as much as Nero was when Paul penned Romans 9? Isn't she, therefore EMPOWERED BY GOD to chose abortion as a sovereign over her body, at least as much as any earthly king was empowered by God as a sovereign over a nation?
From a strictly Biblical perspective, that is.

(23,287 posts)...the woman HAS no authority over her own body. She's property, and the man owns her--HE decides what's best for her...

(4,286 posts)a single woman with no father has no "owner." So at least in that case, she would have personal sovereignty.
I guess the American Taliban want to be surrogate fathers / husbands / masters.

(775 posts)but babies are never a mistake.
I once had a friend whose headaches were so bad after her rape/pregnancy that her Catholic doctor recommended an abortion. I can see how rape can cause so much stress that it can make women need to have an abortion.
That said, I don't think abortion is necessarily the answer in most cases. I might be for aborting the rapist, especially since our justice system seems to be good for nothing at times.
