2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumSo, is 15 across the nation now the right thing for all of you who steadfastly attacked it?
New York, although comfortable for Clinton personally, has presented her campaign with a tightrope to walk: How to talk about her position on the minimum wage in the midst of the Empire State raising its state minimum to $15.
Clinton has supported raising the federal minimum wage to $12 for much of her campaign while also supporting states such as New York and California and cities like Seattle, which have enacted higher minimum wages.
But on Saturday, Clinton appeared to indicate that she wanted a $15 federal minimum wage.
"I am very proud of New York and I was with (Gov. Andrew) Cuomo when he signed the bill raising the minimum wage in New York," Clinton said. "We now gotta do that for the entire nation."

(48,181 posts)Clinton''s position before yesterday, defended here by her loyal campers, was that 12 was the right number, that 15 was too high. Her new position appears to be that 15 is the right number.

(2,331 posts)I think $12 would be monumental given the current political environment.

(13,889 posts)Unless you live in SF Bay area or LA, basically. $12/hr seems like a reasonable national level given variations in the cost of living. Of course I would like to see it automatically recalculated on an annual or electoral cycle basis rather than needing to be manually adjusted by congress.

(11,988 posts)It doesn't say she wants to raise it to $15 for the entire nation. It's not inconsistent with her earlier statements.

(47,209 posts)12$ was what was broadly supported by the senate, it's not a number she pulled out of her ass designed to make her look like a tough negotiator. I assume she is talking about raising the floor on a federal level- like she has for quite a while.

(2,493 posts)IS too high. And I'm a Bernie supporter. $15 might work in NYC or San Francisco but is too high in many, many places.

(2,493 posts)But when I was a youngster working at a grocery store, car wash or fast food restaurant I made something around minimum wage, and it was a whole hell of a lot less than $15 an hour (probably in the $4+ an hour range). $15 hour federal minimum wage isn't something we need or that I would support.

(11,197 posts)you were a "youngster working at a grocery store/car wash/fast food restaurant". I might also add that you are EXCEPTIONALLY lucky to live in an area where only "youngsters" fill such minimal wage jobs. and not any folks actually trying to support a family. Do you live in OZ?
Sounds like a wonderful place. Is it in America?

I make quite a bit less than $15 and I'd prefer that the company I work for pays for my work and not my neighbors.
Less than $15 is simply externalizing an expense so the billionaires that own the company I work for and keep more profits. Fuck 'em

(9,841 posts)that she never said she's for a $15 federal wage, but that she's for SOME increases in the minimum wage everywhere.
So for example, she might argue that New York ought to get a $15 minimum, but Michigan should get only a $12 minimum. And Arizona, maybe only $10.

(68,868 posts)Pretty easy to interpret Clinton's statement as getting states to increase the minimum wage in a generic sense without pushing the same $ figure.
