Hillary Clinton announces endorsements from Maryland women

Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign announced more than 200 endorsements from Maryland women on Saturday, a day before her first visit to the state.

The extensive list includes Bel Leong-Hong, a former deputy assistant secretary of defense who is one of Maryland's super delegates, state Sen. Joanne C. Benson of Prince George's County and former Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon, who is running this year to reclaim City Hall.

Clinton, who is scheduled to visit Port Covington on Sunday, has captured support from more women voters than Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders in most of the states that have conducted exit polling, and the announcement Saturday is intended to send a message of solidarity with the critical constituency.

The former secretary of state led Maryland women 60 percent to 35 percent in a Washington Post-University of Maryland poll released on Thursday.

"Hillary Clinton has been breaking down barriers and seeking to empower women both nationally and internationally for her entire career," Leong-Hong said in a statement. "Hillary knows that when women succeed, families succeed, and communities succeed."

Both candidates have started to ramp up their organization in Maryland, which offers the second-highest share of delegates after Pennsylvania on April 26. The Clinton campaign has held several events in the state; Sanders opened his fourth Maryland field office on Friday, and announced endorsements from a number of community activists this week.
