2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWhat kind of campaign pulls this kind of stunt?
Seriously, what kind of campaign, would send it's candidate to Italy right after a debate and before the voting to attend a 30 person closed conference of academics where he may not even get a chance to speak and if he does speak, will asked to expound upon a 25 year old papal encyclical about which he probably knows nothing and apply it to the contemporary scene?
The Vatican conference on Centesimus annus will be a small gathering of roughly 30 scholars. It is not open to the public. Pope Francis is not expected to attend, though Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga, head of the pope's Council of Cardinals, will open speak at the conference's opening.
The remainder of the conference will situate around the presentation of five papers. Presenters include Sachs and each of the Latin American presidents, in addition to Fr. Bryan Hehir, of the Harvard University John F. Kennedy School of Government, and José Casanova, senior fellow at the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace and World Affairs, in Washington, D.C.
Asked if Sanders might address the conference as well, Sanchez said, "I think that he needs to have the same possibility as the other political leaders." He clarified that it would have to be within the context of Centesimus annus.

Maybe they were hoping for an audience or at least a photo-op with the Pope?
Heads should roll, but they probably won't. I doubt they know how ridiculous they are looking.

(1,235 posts)Obviously this move, one that "cynically" takes a wildly popular US politician, almost a folk hero, for better or worst, now known the world over; Puts him in at a (no longer obscure since it's a candidate with a come-back story in the 2016 presidential elections) conference, that potentially influences billions of Catholics and hundreds of millions of Americans on the issues of economic and environmental justice .... of course this will be a disaster for Bernie ... you're right, the OP has it nailed. This will cost Bernie at LEAST 7 bagillon delegates.

(14,177 posts)A Presidential candidate has an opportunity to go to the Vatican and talk about the issues of poverty and social justice and he gets attacked by liberals for it. What kind of liberal pulls this kind of stunt? Is it the kind that engages in a war against the poor. Or the kind that thinks children should be seen not heard and for damn sure shouldn't vote in their own interests? Or is it the kind that wants to forget Bill Clinton told BLM that they don't care about people being murdered in their own communities?

(4,981 posts)But Sanders obviously has other priorities.
So Clinton people should be thrilled Sanders is out of the country talking with religious, economics and humanitian advocates.
It's also a scoring for Sanders I'm sure. I'm especially thrilled that Dr. Jeffrey Sachs will be there. He is a huge supporter of Sanders.

(1,267 posts).....the "campaign" isn't sending him. He was invited to participate in a discussion which may help shape the futures of countless people worldwide
Second, the topics which will be discussed are of great importance to him (and should be of importance to all Democrats), so, yes, he likely sees this as a remarkable honor AND an opportunity to do tangible good in the world, so, no, he won't be passing it up because YOU think it's ridiculous.
You see, Bernie isn't a cardboard cutout -- he is the real deal, and he actually walks the walk (as opposed to just talking the talk). He cares about people -- ALL people, not just the ones who can cough up $300k for a dinner with the rich and fabulous -- and their futures. Of course he's going, and we should ALL be proud & supportive.
