2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI'm going to a swing state to Volunteer/Anybody else doing so?
Since I live in a solidly red state (argh! georgia) with no competitive House races and no Senate race to work for, I decided I will head to my nearest competitive swing state to volunteer in the last two weeks.
So, Florida here I come!
If anybody else wants to do this and needs to see what's going on in a particular state, barackobama.com has everything you need to know. Just type in a zip code of where you plan to go, and all of the events, obama local headquarters, etc. will come up.
For those that have never phone banked or done a door-to-door canvas and are a little nervous about it, please don't be. They don't send you to unfriendly doors or phone numbers. You will be seeing or calling Dems. It helps the campaign to find out who has already voted and who hasn't and to remind those that haven't and offer them polling place info and rides to the polls.
Anybody else going to a swing state?
Of course, if you can't travel, you can always make phone calls from your own home to swing states (this info also on barackobama.com).
Only 14 more days and many states are voting now! Let's win this thing!!!

(3,003 posts)Eight years ago I traveled to Ohio to help canvass for Kerry during the last weekend before Election Day. Unfortunately, now that I have two kids and other responsibilities, I can no longer make such trips. I strongly recommend that you go to Ohio instead of Florida. Florida is always a tough nut for us to crack (we've only carried the state twice in the last eight elections)...too many damn conservatives live there. Even in 2008, the greatest Democratic year in decades, Obama narrowly carried the state.
Ohio is far more in reach for us and it is a state we MUST win.

(43 posts)Dont know anybody in Ohio.
I think Ohio is more winnable also. However, I think we can also take Florida again. Will do all I can to help do so.

(42 posts)I want to go to the Florida panhandle area and help drive people to the polls and such...
but I did an unfortunate thing that makes it all so complicated.

(6,150 posts)We phonebank into Virginia and get lots of Romney supporters, when we even get people to answer the phone! It's not always easy, and it's not all roses. But we do it anyway.
We had 40 folks drive to Virginia from Catonsville, MD on Saturday. Great turnout! Folks from Annapolis, MD, Columbia, MD, PG and Montgomery County, MD and Washington DC ALL headed down to VA this weekend. We are fired up and ready to go.
Swinging VA looks like a possibility. My fingers are crossed.

(43 posts)Mostly I've been told that we are only doing GOTV calls with friendlies.
But, if they give me a "persuasion" list, Im fine with that too.

(8,217 posts)We only canvassed registered Democrats however, so that was easy.
Just asking who they are voting for and if they need a ride to the precinct.

(7,728 posts)We did 85 houses two weekends ago, and will be doing more canvassing the weekend before the election. I've been making food for the precinct as well . . . bought some paper products last time I was at the drugstore and dropped them off (store is next door to HQ).
Now that I'm finally shaking this awful flu/virus, whatever it is, I'm gonna see if they need the bathroom and eating area/fridge cleaned. Maybe they can talk me into doing some phone work, but I really am not good at that. I much rather interact face-to-face.
I'm waiting for committee person to get back to me for poll watching, I did it 4 years ago.
I live just outside of Philly, NW area in Montgomery County.
