Panama Papers: Hillary Clinton Donor Benefits From Tax Loopholes While She Calls For AccountabilityFormer Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, speaking Wednesday during a campaign swing through Pennsylvania, said the Panama Papers show one part of a larger problem, in which the ultra-wealthy avoid paying billions in taxes every year. Her comments came the day after her Democratic presidential challenger, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, vowed to repeal the Clinton-supported 2011 free trade agreement that opponents warned at the time would make corporate tax evasion in Panama worse.
Some of you may have just heard about these disclosures about outrageous tax havens and loopholes that super rich people across the world are exploiting in Panama and elsewhere, Clinton said Wednesday. Now, some of this behavior is clearly against the law, and anyone who violates the law anywhere should be held accountable. But, its also scandalous how much is actually legal. That is why last year I proposed a plan to shut down the so-called private tax system for the mega-wealthy.
Clinton is referring to the numerous ways in which wealthy Americans including at least one of her biggest donors manage their money in order to pay lower taxes. The strategies for controlling their tax rate can save millions or more, and virtually none of the methods are available to average tax payers. They include hiring expensive lawyers, estate planners and lobbyists to exploit tax law through a variety of means, including investments in hedge funds, charitable trusts and routing money to overseas shell corporations and back, according to a report by the New York Times last year.
At least one of Clintons biggest donors, hedge fund manager James Simons, has benefitted from those strategies. His firm, Renaissance Technologies, was the subject of a review by the IRS because of a tax loophole that saved the firm an estimated $6.8 billion over a decade, according to a Senate investigation. So far in the 2016 cycle, Simons has donated $3.5 million to Priorities USA Action, the ....

(24,010 posts)I fear that, if she does make it to the White House again, it will just be one scandal after another, one investigation after another, ad infinitum, and even if she intended to do anything beneficial for the rest of us--and she has yet to convince me that she will--she won't have time. And her opportunities for corruption, already exploited in her role as Sec of State, will be greatly enhanced and she will have much greater power to suppress information about corrupt and illegal behavior--her own, the Clinton Foundation's, Bill's, her friends--though Republicans in Congress will have a field day doing nothing for the rest of us while they play their Clinton investigation games.
I don't just blame her, and the DNC, and our transglobal corporate rulers, for her candidacy. I blame myself and all of us who have been negligent (not everyone but most of us, I think) for not, somehow, heading it off before this. Well, we didn't. And it's up to "we, the people" to do it now. Do we want this corrupt Clinton machine in the White House again? We now have the opportunity to stop it happening. We may never have such an opportunity again.

Rich folks paid for services. Services were rendered. And those of us who find such behavior inappropriate for Democratic presidential candidate are being told to sit down, STFU, and vote for a person who stands for the very entities that are crushing us economically, spiritually, and physically.
I just can't do it. I will fight for economic justice until the day I die. I will not support the forces aligned against me and my brothers and sisters.

She's so right. And when the findings get announced from her email server investigation, I expect the DoJ to follow her statement to the letter.
