OOPS! BILL CLINTON SAYS HE ACCIDENTALLY TOOK $500,000 FROM ALGERIA DURING KEY ARMS NEGOTIATION WITH STATE DEPARTMENT
APRIL 5, 2016| BY ROBERT GEHL
Bill Clinton is claiming his foundation accidentally accepted money from foreign governments who were negotiating with his wife while she was Secretary of State a definite no-no.
The Clinton Foundation received $500,000 from Algeria in 2010 while the country was lobbying the State Department for an increase in weapons export authorization.
The International Business Times says that some of those export authorizations were for weapons classified as toxicological agents, including chemical agents [and] biological agents.
[Critics] said, Oh you got $500,000 from Algeria at very same time they were lobbying the State Department, Clinton said. Those two facts are accurate but if you put them back-to-back they are incredibly misleading. Heres why: I never considered that the Algerians gave me the money.
Huh?
Clinton said that at the time of the donation, We put out the word that if anyone wanted to send me money I would forward it on quickly to Haiti where it would do most good and would take zero overhead. The sequence of the money and the lobbying, he asserted, was just an accident. To me it was like a pass-through. I didnt even think about it.

(2,379 posts)If the Panama Papers have shocked the world, then we can assume what these documents leaked was previously UNKNOWN information.
Therefore, if there's this much previously unknown information out there, absolutely NO ONE can say with 100% certainty that Hillary has been completely vetted. The leak of these documents indicates there may be much, much more that has never come to light about her, Bill, the Clinton Foundation, and who knows how many of their associates.
At this point, until names are named, a person can only make an educated guess based on our two candidates' track record of actions/behavior.
My own personal guess (based solely on my gut feeling based on what I've read so far and my impression of the candidates and their history of ACTIONS, not rhetoric), which I know has zero value beyond my own mind -- they may each end up having acquaintances/colleagues who are mixed up in this, but I seriously doubt Bernie will be directly implicated. I think the Clintons and their Foundation will be linked, though. I only hope enough comes to light before the convention to show what a damaged candidate she would be in the GE.

(3,040 posts)Is that the documents were stolen from only the 4th largest she'll company firm. Those that are truly adept financially and politically would use a much more secure and discreet firm to hide their money. For every person that goes down in this scandal, rest assured that those not named are doubling down and further burying their finances. And, the Clintons and their foundation are too intertwined in that mileu to not be heavily involved.
Those of consequence were probably told to get the eff out before the leak was released.

(180 posts)People with this much wealth wouldn't trust their entire empire to one law firm. I'm sure the super-rich clientele used the services of multiple firms. This allows them to "diversify" and spread their risk, and it also helps provide a small measure of additional secrecy about their true financial situation. No one is allowed to see the full picture, except for a very small circle of advisors.

(71 posts)New E-mails Show
ABC News has obtained State Department e-mails that shed light on Bill Clintons lucrative speaking engagements and show he and the Clinton Foundation tried to get approval for invitations related to two of the most repressive countries in the world -- North Korea and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
While Hillary Clinton served as Secretary of State, Bill Clinton earned speaking fees around the globe totaling more than $48 million -- speeches that had to be vetted by the State Department to ensure there were no conflicts of interest with his wife's work as America's top diplomat. These newly revealed emails show speech requests that the State Department refused to approve.
The emails -- which have come to light because of a public records request by the conservative group Citizens United, which sued the State Department to get the documents -- show just how far Bill Clinton was willing to go to earn those lucrative fees -- seeking approval for appearances with ties to two of the most brutal countries in the world.

The Clinton Foundation and Haiti Contracts, The Wall Street Journal, March 8, 2015 http://www.wsj.com/articles/mary-anastasia-ogrady-the-clinton-foundation-and-haiti-contracts-1425855083
Development banks are the butt of jokes among economists because while they claim to fight poverty they are mostly good at empire building. The same might be said of the Clintons in Haiti. A few months after Hillary Clinton became secretary of state in 2009, Bill Clinton was named the U.N. special envoy to Haiti. That gave the Clintons a lot of power over U.S. foreign-aid decisions in the small country.
They accumulated more influence after the 2010 earthquake, when Bill was named co-chair of the Interim Haiti Recovery Commission. The State Department began directing parties interested in competing for Haiti contracts to the Clinton Foundation. Being on the right side of Bill matters if you want to benefit from U.S. foreign aid destined for Haiti.
(snip)
The IDBs gifts are perhaps easier to understand since the State Department plays a key role in approving the banks U.S. funding. The IDB told me in an email it made a 2014 donation to the Clinton Foundation of $150,000 for The Future of the Americas Meeting. Between 2009 and 2013 it donated another $925,000 to finance expenses and activities for the planning and design of 7 public policy forums . . . in which leaders on key topics relevant to the work of the Bank were able to exchange ideas, enhance their understanding and forge new and stronger partnerships.
The problem with the Clintons in Haiti is that everywhere you go, they are there with the appearance of a conflict of interest. Haiti is unlikely to triumph over its long struggle against corruption when the U.S. government grants a former U.S. president wide power, with little oversight, to dispense hundreds of millions in the midst of such destitution.
The article discusses the arrest of people who donated to the Clinton Get Rich scheme in Brazil who also work in Haiti, and how the same problems occurred there because Bill was in charge.
Hundreds of millions of dollars wasted, people there still destitute and children starving.
Well, Haiti is now perfect, right? Thanks, Clintons!
CherokeeDem
(3,709 posts)Does everything Bill and Hillary Clinton do have to be questioned? Bill Clinton led the way in help for Haiti after the horrendous earthquake. For that alone, he deserves respect.
If you can show me where he or his Foundation kept this money for nefarious reasons, then I'd say go for it. However, I imagine you will find it went where it was intended to go. Not everything is quid pro quo... except in the minds of the anti-Clintons. Was it in this cas? I don't know and neither does anyone who is jumping on this story.

(9,253 posts)I assume they're facts. I don't know much about this issue, but they're from the comments from Naked Capitalism. Author cites "Clinton Cash."
<edit>
So, we should all place this bribery in context. How clintonian.
Heres some context for ya.
Cheryl Mills was the point person for USAIDs response to the Haiti earthquake, Politico reported in 2013.
Bill Clinton was named co-chair of the Interim Haiti Recovery Commission, the organization formed to help the Haitian government coordinate the international donations that were then pouring into the country.
In 2011, the Cinton Foundation reportedly brokered a $45 million deal with Digicel, a cell phone service provider, to open a hotel for aid workers in Port-au-Prince.
Owned by Denis OBrien, a close friend of Bill Clintons, Digicel raked in millions after it set up a mobile system for transferring money via text message an idea both Clintons reportedly endorsed.
OBrien helped Bill Clinton secure three speaking engagements in his native Ireland and even covered some of the event costs himself, according to the Irish Times.
Digicel was one of the first recipients of funds from the Haiti Mobile Money Initiative, launched by USAID in June 2010.
By 2012, Digicel had taken over more than three-quarters of the mobile market in Haiti, according to Peter Schweizers book Clinton Cash.
Plenty more in the article in the context of warren buffet/clayton homes and the swindling of land from smallholder farmers for an industrial park which produced neither the promised jobs nor the promised housing. In fact, in 2013 nearly 95% of that land remains unused. Perhaps bill is still negotiating with united fruit company.
It would appear that context is one of the famously fungible clinton constructs.

And I am in agreement with you on Deadwood as #2, perhaps with Season 2 of the FX series Fargo alongside it and season 1 of Fargo just behind, but ahead of Breaking Bad. I binge watched Deadwood a few years ago when I had HBO on Demand. I bought the DVD set of it along with Breaking Bad so I can watch it again every few years. It is about time to watch The Wire again from beginning to end again. It has been several years and with the themes of Bernie's campaign (the war on drugs, breakdown of education, mass incarceration, money in politics) I am sure I will see it with fresh eyes next time.

(55,745 posts)The Clinton Foundation's business relationship with 20 foreign governments raises real questions about her judgment
by DAVID SIROTA
Salon.com, SUNDAY, MAY 31, 2015
Among all the rivers of money that have flowed to the Clinton family, one seems to raise the biggest national security questions of all: the stream of cash that came from 20 foreign governments who relied on weapons export approvals from Hillary Clintons State Department.
Federal law designates the secretary of state as responsible for the continuous supervision and general direction of sales of arms, military hardware and services to foreign countries. In practice, that meant that Clinton was charged with rejecting or approving weapons deals and when it came to Clinton Foundation donors, Hillary Clintons State Department did a whole lot of approving.
While Clinton was secretary of state, her department approved $165 billion worth of commercial arms sales to Clinton Foundation donors. That figure from Clintons three full fiscal years in office is almost double the value of arms sales to those countries during the same period of President George W. Bushs second term.
The Clinton-led State Department also authorized $151 billion of separate Pentagon-brokered deals for 16 of the countries that gave to the Clinton Foundation. That was a 143 percent increase in completed sales to those nations over the same time frame during the Bush administration. The 143 percent increase in U.S. arms sales to Clinton Foundation donors compares to an 80 percent increase in such sales to all countries over the same time period.
American military contractors and their affiliates that donated to the Clinton Foundation and in some cases, helped finance speaking fees to Bill Clinton also got in on the action. Those firms and their subsidiaries were listed as contractors in $163 billion worth of arms deals authorized by the Clinton State Department.

The actions of the Clinton Foundation and how the Clinton's have enriched themselves post Bill Clinton's time as POTUS bears concern.
No ex-POTUS has been enriched post service as had Bill (and Hillary) Clinton.
No POTUS has had a non-profit foundation of size and scope as The Clinton Foundation by orders of magnitude.
No SOS has had a direct interest in such a foundation with obvious conflicts of interest.
