2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI actually feel sorry for Hillary.
I know you might find it hard to believe, but I really do feel for her.
Can you imagine what it must be like to have gone through the things she has? She deserves so much praise for coming out of her husband's shadow. First she had to endure the humiliating list of affairs and sexual scandals that her husband was involved in, and she dutifully played the role as loyal wife, standing by her husband through all of it. She sacrificed her own well-being and some would even say her pride for the sake of the country, the Democratic Party and her children.
Moving forward, she was clever enough to find an open Senate seat in a state she knew nothing about and she shoe-horned her way into the Senate with really no advantages other than a popular two-term President as a husband a large political war chest. She served honorably as Senator, standing up for core Democratic issues as a loyal soldier -even on issues that we now know she was against such as opposing gay marriage. In fact, she was so loyal of a soldier, that she went with the majority of Democrats in voting for the resolution to use force in Iraq and other "difficult choices".
More difficulty came her way when she tried unsuccessfully parry a Senate term into the highest office in the land only to find herself beaten by the first-ever Black president of the United States (not counting Bill who some people said was actually the first Black President). Incredibly, though, she took those lemons and turned them into lemonade when the very same Barack Obama selected her as Secretary of State, which some say he did merely as a cynical ploy to prevent her from opposing him in his run for 2nd term.
While Secretary of State, Hillary loyally carried out the wishes of the President on issues we now know she is against such as her pushing of the TPP Trade Deal, her promotion of fracking all around the world, and her negotiating unprecedentedly large arms sales to oppressive regimes. It could not have been an easy time for her and she deserves credit for doing things were such an anethema to her.
Now we find her trying to claim the position of POTUS that she is so deserved of and she has to deal with a challenge from who of all, but a Socialist who wasn't even a Democrat! It's outrageous, and this obscene crime against all that the Centrist Wing of the Democratic Party and its beloved lobbyists hold dear is compounded by the fact that they dare challenge her credentials as a Progressive! They have the temerity to oppose her from the Left, claiming to be a movement of establishment outsiders when nothing could be further from the truth! She points out rightly that the true outsider in this race is Hillary Clinton herself despite what anyone might believe.
Things are starting to look like a slow-motion nightmare now, the kind that you have over and over again, like the one where you're being chased by a monster and you just can't get your legs to run right... you know the one I mean. It must be very dispiriting, a kind of nauseating deja-vu like finding yourself staring into a mirror in a brightly fluorescent lit bathroom while you're tripping on high-powered acid. Actually, forget that last part. I'm kind of veering into my own personal freak out space now.
But anyway, the point is the same, and that's that I really do feel sorry for Hillary. I wish her nothing but the best.

(3,226 posts)It should not matter that she opposed gay mariage, voted for war, sold her self to Wallstreet, hid her emails from the freedom of information act requests, leaked classified secrets, supported trade packs that help ship jobs overseas. It also should not matter that she supports the Goverments right to have a say in a woman's choice whether to have an abortion or not. None of those actions mater all that maters is this is her time now and her views, actions and support from the 1% over the 99% need not be thought about. How do we know know this is true because for over a year Main Stream Media keeps telling us that "Hillary's has this in the bag"

(4,805 posts)and really. I don't feel sorry for her at all. Choices. She had them. She made them. The woman has managed to live an incredible life has a beautiful child and grandchild and the money to do whatever she wants. Whats there to feel sorry for?
How many SoS before her have been satisfied to end their career on that high note?

BUT - I am very concerned by the campaign saying that they will disqualify and defeat Sanders and then unify the party afterwards.

I'm rather convinced the only reason she wants to win the election is to be big type in the history books. If it wasn't, she might have a vision to aspire to rather than just beating the drum for the status quo.

(62,271 posts)Your comments about the Obama-Clinton relationship are completely off base and without merit. Please tell us more about Obama's ploy to not be primaried by Clinton in 2012. That's fascinating as primarying an incumbent Democrat has worked out so well in the past.
As far as gay marriage, I think most Dems have been for it, but states were passing bans all the way up until 2012 for crying out loud. I think the Dem's viewed the SCOTUS as the true route to it and let it play its course through policy makers, state legislatures, state amendments, and court rulings. The pragmatic approach, but slow and steady. BTW, by "most Dems have been for it" I think, either privately, very privately, or personally (in their heads) they've been for it, but were afraid to say so since the bans were going out at such a steady pace. Prop 8 is a fascinating example. Like religion, I think we've had a couple of atheist Presidents already (Bill, Obama, maybe GWB), but they won't state so publicly. So it's hard to swallow when Clinton said she "didn't think about it" and she "came around to it." (Gay marriage.) She likely "already believed" before the polls switched.
As far as the rest of your derisive post, you might enjoy American Experience: Clinton, you can find it on your local PBS affiliate site for free streaming. Just to remind you, a tiny bit, what they put up with in the 90s. Maybe.

Still waiting to read all about this "cynical ploy."
Bonobo
(29,257 posts)We can call it speculative fiction.
But I do NOT think there is any love between Obama and Clinton. Furthermore, Obama is an excellent strategist. I seriously doubt that he did not have some ulterior motivation for appointing her as SOS.
Perhaps you think he simply did not have a better or more favored choice. You're welcome to that opinion, but I think it's very naive.
joshcryer
(62,271 posts)I consider Obama a pragmatic statesman and I think he saw that offering her the position, when he didn't have to, would bolster her credentials if she wanted to run again. He could always dump her if she went third rail (which is what many thought she might do). I think he nominated her because she did everything she could to unify the party (nominating him by acclamation despite a 62 pledged delegate spread, joining him in Unity, NH for their first joint campaign appearance, stumping for him dozens of times in the elections, etc). I think he saw her as sincere.
It was definitely quid pro quo, but only after Clinton gave a lot of quid.
Of all the people in his cabinet in daily contact she was probably the least annoying with the exception of Holder. Hell, a lot of Clinton's time in the position was on planes and sleeping. That's not an insult to her, she traveled a lot. And that's not necessarily an accomplishment, either, but the US under Obama was trying to fix strained ties under Bush. Have to meet in person to give it a shot.
So I think their sitting down, having beers, photo ops of them smiling are totally and completely sincere. They didn't deal much outside of Clinton following orders with this or that policy proposal. Oh, and boy, Clinton busted her ass on TPP, too, and I think Obama really respects and appreciates her for that. Her equivocation on TPP is nonsensical. She against it because it doesn't do stuff, not because it does. And, actually, I think her fervent work on TPP is why he gave her a bit of leeway on Libya. Try to get "something" done. And I'll be frank, I don't think he thought she could get a vote to pass. But she pulled the Responsibility to Protect gambit, which yes, even Senator Sanders voted for, and it worked.
As far as no love with people he had to deal with daily? I think Rahm Emanuel was probably his biggest headache with Geithner a close second.

(29,257 posts)I am a translator, but it is not well understood by those who only speak one language that, in the process of translation -particularly when the languages are as unrelated as Japanese and English - that it is much more like writing than it is what people imagine translation to be (a sort of process of replacing words). A translated work is actually more of an expression of the translator than it is the audience.
A translator must be a good writer and serve several masters: The original author and their intent, as well as the target audience. It is a process that involves a deep empathetic understanding of the way in which the source content is received by its readers in the original language, and then it demands that the translator find a way to try to reproduce the same set of feelings in the target audience.
My work has been enjoyed by millions of people and received high praise. Thanks for asking.

(3,017 posts)I feel sorry for all the people who are dead because of her vote for the Iraq War and and for all their families. I feel sorry for all the people abroad who died because of her hawkish policies as Secretary of State. I feel sorry for the people who are or have been incarcerated unjustly and had their lives ruined because of the Crime Bill that her husband passed with her support. I feel sorry for the people who went hungry because of the Welfare Bill her husband passed with her support.
I wish both of them would slither away in disgrace and never be seen in public again.

(9,385 posts)And add to it...
This is a woman who rose to the level of her own incompetence long ago, who can't even do email without making it an FBI disaster, who has spent most of her time piling up illicit millions for herself by peddling influence and the office of Sec. of State like there's no tomorrow.
Sorry for her? Hell, no! I want to see her not only defeated, I want to see her lose every dime she has and wrongfully gained by taking advantage of her positions of trust, and I want to see her and Bill charged and convicted of screwing over this government. That's what I want.
I don't expect to get it, but then again I might, and I'd be damn thrilled if I did.
I don't think she has one positive quality and I don't think she is the slightest bit competent or qualified. She scores a big zero with me, and she worked hard to get it because I gave her the benefit of the doubt about a lot of things for a long time. Now I see what's behind the curtain.

(6,007 posts)Haven't you ever heard of people of true honor and integrity who RESIGNED from office rather than promote or carry out policies they disagreed with?
No one FORCED Hillary to promote those bad policies as SoS, which YOU say she disagreed with. I don't think she did disagree with them. No one forced her! SHE did it!
And behind the scenes she promoted all kinds of horrible policies. SHE did it.
So, stop with the wheepy liberal nonsense.
If you have a real issue of hers you totally support, then come out from behind the made up fairy tales and stand up and defend it.
I think Frank Zappa put it best ==> "Do you love it, do you hate it, there it is, the way you made it. Wow!"
She made her own bed.

(2,064 posts)Bottom line is she is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Goldman Sachs and their ilk. The same vermin who profit on the backs of millions of working-class and poor Americans. Her "public service" has made her a gazillionaire, once again, funded on the backs of the people being crushed by an economy that she and her friends have rigged for the 1%.
I get your point and the sarcasm, but what she has done, and who she rubs elbows with (and accepts money from) thoroughly repulses me. I cannot and will not support the very forces that are trying to destroy my brothers and sisters who do the lions share of the workings bleeding, and dying for these corporate bastards.
