(1,536 posts)I'd say the Iraq war was one of the BIGGEST issues in recent memory.

(29,798 posts)Seriously. How can any human with even a speck of empathy dismiss the consequences of Hillary's cynical vote for that war?
I'm being sincere when I say that your comment is literally revolting - it causes me to feel like I want to vomit it is so disgusting. Don't you have any idea of how your behavior is perceived?

(11,014 posts)It is easy to sit in an insignificant state like Vermont and refuse to vote for it.
As easy it is for a senator from NY to vote for the Brady bill but Bernie voted against it FIVE times.
DesertFlower
(11,649 posts)wrong. should we punish all the other senators who voted for it? kerry and biden were 2 of them and both ran for prez.
she's not perfect but she is the most qualified of all the candidates to be prez.

(1,235 posts)they voted for what anyone with half a brain knew was a pile of bullshit. We knew Iraq was not involved with 9/11, and the WMD nonsense was moronic, Desert Strom and 10 or so years of 'no fly zone' DU bombing, and super stiff sanctions made that so unlikely it was ridicules to believe there were WMDs.
They should all have resigned for making such a violent and dumbass vote.

(29,798 posts)I don't say I thought they were bogus or anything like that - I knew they were bogus. And so did a very large chunk of the populace.
I'm giving Hillary the benefit of the doubt by saying cynical because the only alternatives are that she is either extremely dull witted or a blood-thirsty warmonger.
BTW, she has claimed that she backed it in return for support from Shrub on money for rebuilding after 911. Starting a process that kills more than a million people in return for funds you should get anyway is as "cynical" as it comes.

(13,424 posts)That should tell you everything you need to know about the IWR.
However, a large chunk of Americans opposing it is by no means a majority of Americans. To believe that large chunk was a majority at the time is to rewrite history. Yes, significant numbers of Americans opposed the IWR but the majority of Americans at the time supported it.
kristopher
(29,798 posts)No, I don't judge right and wrong by the standards of congress. They are there to reflect the values of the country, not the other way around.
LonePirate
(13,424 posts)Sometimes doing what is right for America conflicts with what Americans want/support. In this instance, Congress sided with supporting what their constituents supported.
It is simply wrong to say a majority of Americans were opposed to the IWR. That is not the case at all. There is nothing naïve about stating the truth that the IWR had majority support among the American people. I'm not justifying the IWR. I'm simply relaying an accurate fact of recent American history.
kristopher
(29,798 posts)DELIBERATELY.
They created fear and stampeded SOME the US public with propaganda that was utterly transparent - Remember Valarie Plame, Judy Miller; slashing the price on the war like a used car salesman; we'll be greeted like liberators?
On and on. At least half of the public knew they were lying and those in the Senate - all of them - knew the justifications were a lie. The 911 hijackers were Saudis FFS - Iran had nothing to do with it.
We're done.
kristopher
(29,798 posts)There were 21 Dems voted against it in the Senate.
In the case of WWII only 1 Senator voted against it.

(755 posts)Some senators did not have a choice. It was a stupid war, foolish war. Move on.
EmperorHasNoClothes
(4,797 posts)Well, voting for the war is OK then. I'm sure the hundred thousand dead wouldn't mind if they knew that people would have been mean to those senators if they voted against the war.
On the other hand, they could have actually stood up for what is right for once instead of what is politically expedient.
felix_numinous
(5,198 posts)knew Patriot was prewritten, there were no bid contracts, stolen election, W being prewarned the summer before. If millions of people knew this war was pre arranged prior to 911 how could anyone claim ignorance to vote for it??
