(68,868 posts)People move here from all over the world. Immigrants, transplants from the Midwest.
What do you call a New Yorker who moves to Vermont and spends virtually his entire adult life there?
A Vermonter.
It was great for Bernie to swing by the Bronx--had he been there since driving through on his way to Vermont?

I was born in Manhattan, have been a Democrat for 47 years, and to me Bernie is definitely both a solid Democrat and a New Yorker.

(39,324 posts)as you avatar. I'll admit I'm a tad Californian too, but as a New Yorker I deserve the right to make fun of Californians.
Another thing. If you have a New York accent, you're always a New Yorker, that's how people perceive you. Can you imagine a British person saying oh I'm a Texan with a British accent, not going to work.

However, I am a New Yorker. Why? I was born there, I lived there, I understand and feel the City deeply, and I'll put my experience there up against anybody. Never fails to feel like home.
I'm sure Bernie would too, and heck, anybody who listens to him or hangs out with him for a minute can see the New Yorker in him. And I want that New Yorker fighting for me, as only a New Yorker can.
Hillary Clinton does not feel like a New Yorker to me. Wellesley, yes. Sometimes a little Arkansas. Washington D.C., definitely. I can also see her growing up in Park Ridge, outside of Chicago. But New York? Not so much.

(39,324 posts)Well my mom is and my dad moved there to teach when I was in high school. So I started to spend a lot of time there still do in the summer when LA gets a bit too hot. I went to crazy hippie Goddard College - the place where Jane Sanders was President for a bit.
Noticed that Rachel Maddow pronounced Goddard College like Godard the French filmmaker. That told me she doesn't know about the era of crazy Goddard even though she lives in New England. She's a youngster. It's kind of an obscure part of history I suppose but now that scene is on the national stage via Bernie.
I'd live in Vermont but for the winters, early springs, late falls. That leaves the last week of May to mid October, then brrr.

and lived there for many years. And though I've since lived in California and Paris and Munich and Boston, New York is and always will be my hometown.
And all the New Yorkers I know accept me as such, and know/feel it in their bones, that I am made of New York, wherever I am.
Bernie too. I believe any true New Yorker, without an axe to grind, who listens to him or hangs out with him for a minute can see the New Yorker in him. And I want that New Yorker fighting for me, as only a New Yorker can.

Amuses me how transplants try to define, for native New Yorkers, what it means to be from New York.

What Carole King ('a New Yorker by birth and by heart') wishes you knew about Hillary Clinton

So Carole is a New Yorker but Bernie is a Vermonter. It's always 'different' for Bernie.....

Here's the Whole Truth:
Bernie Wins Wisconsin on Honesty and Inspiration; Gets Shamed on Cover of New York Paper
By Pam Martens and Russ Martens
Wall Street on Parade: April 6, 2016
According to ABC exit polls, Senator Bernie Sanders big win of 56.5 percent to Hillary Clintons 43.1 percent in the Democratic primary yesterday in Wisconsin was fueled by voters belief in his honesty, his ability to inspire and confidence that he can improve the economy. But the very day that Sanders should be enjoying that big win, the New York Daily News has seen fit to devote its full front cover of todays newspaper to shaming Sanders.
What did Sanders do to infuriate the New York Daily News? Absolutely nothing. The newspaper has twisted an interview its editorial board conducted with Sanders on April 1 into a pretzel to come up with a headline screaming that Sanders callously defends gunmakers against the relatives of the victims of the Sandy Hook school shooting, who are attempting to sue the gun manufacturer for selling the assault weapon that killed the children and school staff.
What Sanders actually said in that interview is that (1) he would vote to ban assault weapons like the one used in Sandy Hook; (2) he supports suing gun manufacturers if they knowingly sell a gun to people exhibiting suspicious behavior; (3) he would significantly strengthen and expand the instant background check, (4) do away with the gun show loophole, where people now are buying guns from unlicensed dealers, and (5) do away with the straw man provision, where you can buy a gun legally and then sell it to somebody whos a criminal. (Read the full transcript here.)
SNIP...
Clearly, Wisconsin Democrats and Independents who handed Sanders a 13 point victory over Clinton want experience infused with a track record of honesty. According to ABC exit polls, 90 percent of voters in yesterdays Democratic primary identified Sanders as honest and trustworthy versus 57 percent who said the same about Clinton.
The ABC exit poll also found that Three-quarters of Democratic primary voters in Wisconsin are worried about the direction of the economy. Nearly four in 10 expect life for the next generation of Americans to be worse than life today, vs. only a third who think itll be better.

The entire article from Pam and Russ Martens is worth reading, remembering and recommending.
Questions: Isn't the owner of that paper also a funder of Hillary's 2016 campaign?
